How to use sugar soap safely and correctly

Updated: October 2026

If the bottle or the box is already beside the bucket, the first rule of how to use sugar soap is to read that pack. Powder, concentrate and ready-to-use spray do not share one dilution, even when two labels mention 4.5 litres of water. For paint preparation you also rinse and let the surface dry before you open the paint. Which listings print a ratio is on the [sugar soap comparison](/hub/diy-supplies/sugar-soap). This page is the sequence, and where you stop. Peter F. did not run a laboratory test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Mix the pack you bought

Put on gloves, protect your eyes if you may splash, and ventilate the room. Use warm water only where the pack says so. Do not mix sugar soap with another cleaner. Bartoline's powder listing gives 500 g in 10 litres of warm water for paint preparation and 250 g in 10 litres for general cleaning. It is not a skin cleaner. The concentrate sheet gives about 125 ml in 4.5 litres for repainting and about 50 ml in 4.5 litres for household cleaning. The Amazon listing says dilute and does not print those quantities, so use the matching label or sheet. ZYBUX says use the whole 500 ml bottle with 4.5 litres. Copying that onto Bartoline makes a different mix. Mangers and the SEVENMEET three-flask listing had no usable ratio. If the pack does not close that gap, do not improvise. The Bartoline sprays need no measuring. Formats are in sugar soap powder vs liquid.

Work from the bottom up, then rinse

Test a small patch first, particularly on an older coating. Apply with a sponge or cloth and work from the bottom upwards. Agitate grease without flooding the wall, and change a filthy solution rather than spreading it. For paint preparation, rinse with clean water. Bartoline's powder and concentrate instructions both require a rinse and a full dry before repainting. Dulux says the same. Do not leave sugar soap on the wall because an old comment said so. Dried alkaline residue is a poor base for a new coat. The weaker Bartoline household mix says some tiles, vinyl floors and paintwork need no rinse in that context. That does not cancel the rinse for paint preparation, and it does not transfer to another brand. The spray bullets say rinse. There is no single drying time. Whether the room needed this wash is in sugar soap before painting.

Protect eyes, skin and other people

Sugar soap is a decorator's cleaner, not a personal-care product. Bartoline's powder information identifies skin and eye irritation. The liquid data gives an alkaline pH of 10 to 11.5, and it recommends gloves for repeated contact and eye protection if you may splash. A review in which someone used it on their fingers does not make that a listed use. Keep children and pets away from the bucket. Wash skin off with plenty of water. For paid work, COSHH duties may apply. A householder cleaning their own hallway is in a different legal setting. If a strong chemical gets into an eye, the NHS says rinse continuously and call 999 or go to A&E, taking the container if you can. Severe pain or a change in sight needs the same urgency. Do not wait for an online answer.

Know when sugar soap is the wrong tool

Stop when the job is no longer ordinary cleaning. Recurring mould points to moisture. Sugar soap is not established here as a mould treatment. Widespread fire soot may need a professional rather than a stronger household scrub. Old paint may contain lead. GOV.UK notes that exposure risk rises when old coatings are sanded, flaked or ingested. Do not sand a suspect coating because the wash failed. Get advice before you disturb it. New plaster is a drying and mist-coat job, not a sugar-soap wash. One spray reviewer bought it for limescale and was not impressed. If you have not bought yet, the sugar soap buying guide matches format to the size of the job.

Common questions

How much Bartoline concentrate goes into 4.5 litres?
Bartoline's concentrate technical sheet gives about 125 ml in 4.5 litres for repainting and about 50 ml for household cleaning. The captured Amazon listing does not print these quantities. Confirm that your bottle is the matching product and follow its current label, not a dose copied from another brand.
How do I mix Bartoline powder for painting?
The Bartoline powder listing and technical sheet specify 500 g in 10 litres of warm water for paint preparation. General cleaning uses 250 g in 10 litres. Dissolve it as directed, clean from the bottom upwards, then rinse with fresh water and let the surface dry before you paint.
Do I always rinse sugar soap off?
Rinse after paint preparation. Bartoline's weaker household concentrate instruction has a limited no-rinse statement for tiles, vinyl floors and paintwork. That does not apply to paint prep, and it does not apply to every brand. The ready-to-use Bartoline spray directions also require rinsing.
Can I use the ZYBUX ratio on Bartoline?
No. ZYBUX prints 500 ml with 4.5 litres. Bartoline's concentrate sheet gives about 125 ml in the same water volume for repainting. They are separate products with separate instructions. Using the larger dose on the Bartoline flask is not the mix on the Bartoline sheet.
What should I do after an eye splash?
Start rinsing continuously with clean water and get urgent help. NHS guidance says a strong chemical in the eye warrants 999 or A&E. Keep rinsing and take the container where you can. Do not rub the eye, and do not wait to see whether the discomfort settles.
Can I paint immediately after rinsing?
Only when the surface is completely dry. No single minute count is reliable for every wall, room and weather condition. Moisture left in the film can mark the next coat. Inspect the surface rather than borrowing a drying time from an unrelated product or a forum post.
