Best pipe bender UK: which listing fits the job

Updated: 23 October 2026

You have a steel tube, a gate frame or a one-off chassis bend, and a search for the best pipe bender UK has sorted the page by stars. Stars will not tell you whether the die is a British Standard pipe size, and they will not tell you whether you should buy a machine at all. On our [pipe bending machine comparison](/hub/diy-supplies/pipe-bending-machine) the three listings are a KATSU ram at about £119.99, a WINMAX bench former at about £199.96 and a DRAUXI roll at about £345.79. This page says who each one is for, and who should leave it. Peter F. read those amazon.co.uk listings and public UK hire and trade pages on 22 October 2026. We did not bend pipe in a lab. Best for stated BSP steel tube

The KATSU 12 ton manual hydraulic is the only listing in this set that prints BSP dies from 1/2 inch to 2 inch and a wall of 2.75 mm to 4.5 mm. It also says it is not for thin-wall copper. If you are bending black or galvanised steel tube inside that wall band, and you can accept a page that states no bend angle, this is the listing that actually describes the job. The comparison table puts the kit at 29.8 kg, so it is a floor frame you can shift, not a machine that stays on a pallet. The amazon.co.uk rating is 3.5 from 20 ratings. That is a wider UK sample than a perfect score from two reviews. Buyers report a machine that worked, a cut from weld spatter, dies that did not match the size on the page, low pressure, thin wall that deformed, and conduit that flattened. One frame arrived bent. A bent frame is a problem with the goods under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, and you take it up with the seller. It is not a technique you correct by pumping harder. If the tube is medium-wall 15 mm steel, read the bending steel pipe page before you assume the 1/2 inch die is in range, because that wall can sit under the 2.75 mm floor printed here.

Best only if you can confirm the inch system

The WINMAX mounted manual bender shows 5.0 from two reviews, and those reviews are from the United States. Two American ratings are not a UK trial of the dies, the bench or the steel you buy from a British merchant. The listing describes formers from 1 inch to 3 inch and does not say whether that inch is nominal bore or outside diameter. An unmarked inch can mean a 33.7 mm steel pipe or a 25.4 mm tube, and those need different formers. The machine weighs 17.1 kg, and a review says the bench has to be fixed before you pull the handle. It is hand powered. Buy it only after you have measured the outside diameter and matched it to a former you can name. If the page still does not say BSP, nominal bore or outside diameter, leave it. How those inch marks should be read is set out in the pipe bending machine buying guide. Until that match is on paper, the higher price and the five stars are not evidence that it will out-bend the KATSU on BS EN 10255 tube.

When not to buy

A single steel bend is often cheaper to hire than to own. Tag Tool Hire in Halifax listed a 12 tonne hydraulic bender at £32.10 excluding VAT for a day and £64.20 excluding VAT for a week, with dies from 1/2 inch to 2 inch, and with 180 degrees made as three 60 degree stages. That is one local firm on the day the page was read, not a UK hire tariff. HSS showed a 12 tonne machine at £233.96 excluding VAT, and that figure reads as a sale price, not a day rate. If you will bend one gate and then store the frame, put the Halifax day rate next to £119.99, then add VAT and your own time, before you call the ram a saving. A repeated nominal-bore bend on gas-specification steel, in a firm that already has the competence for that pipe, sits in another band. The RIDGID HB382 2 inch manual hydraulic was on UK trade sites from about £1,124 to £1,595 including VAT on 21 October 2026, with formers described for gas pipe to BS 1387 / EN 10255 and a weight around 72 kg. We have not tested it, and owning it does not register anyone for gas work. Sealey’s manual for this class of ram says ovality is largely unavoidable. The DRAUXI roll, at about £345.79, states no diameter and no radius, so skip it until the page does. The geometry of a tight elbow against a long sweep is the roll bender versus hydraulic pipe bender page.

Who each listing is for

The KATSU ram is the top pick and the best value in this set when your steel is inside the printed BSP dies and the 2.75 mm to 4.5 mm wall, and you accept that no angle is stated. Buy the WINMAX only after you have proved whether its inch formers are nominal bore or outside diameter and you can bolt the bench down. Do not buy the DRAUXI until a diameter and a radius appear on the page. For one bend, compare a day’s hire before you own any of them. The awards rank only these three stored listings.

Common questions

Which of these three should I buy?
Buy the KATSU if your steel tube is inside the printed BSP dies and the 2.75 mm to 4.5 mm wall, and you accept that no angle is stated. Buy the WINMAX only after you have proved whether its inch formers are nominal bore or outside diameter and you can bolt the bench down. Do not buy the DRAUXI until a diameter and a radius appear on the page. For one bend, compare a day’s hire before you own any of them.
Is the five-star WINMAX better than the KATSU?
The WINMAX score is 5.0 from two US reviews. The KATSU score is 3.5 from 20 ratings on amazon.co.uk, with complaints you can actually use: die mismatch, a bent frame, low pressure and thin wall that deformed. On stated BSP steel the KATSU page is the clearer specification. The WINMAX is the better candidate only if its formers match a tube the KATSU dies do not cover, and you have confirmed that match yourself.
Is £120 enough for occasional steel pipe?
£119.99 is the KATSU shelf price we read, and it can be enough when the die and the wall agree and you will use the frame more than once. It is a poor spend if the tube is thinner than 2.75 mm, if you need a stated angle, or if the job is a single bend you could hire. The price does not include a trial, and listing prices move.
When is hire the better spend?
Hire wins when you need one or two bends and then the machine would sit in a shed. Tag Tool Hire in Halifax was £32.10 excluding VAT a day for a 12 tonne bender with 1/2 inch to 2 inch dies. Treat that as one firm’s price on the day we read it, then ask a hirer near you. Hire is the weaker choice if you bend the same nominal bore every week and you already know the die.
What do KATSU buyers actually complain about?
The useful comments are practical. People mention weld spatter that cut them, dies that did not match the advertised size, a pump that would not build pressure, thin-wall tube and conduit that flattened, and a frame that arrived bent. Other buyers say the kit worked. Read those against your wall thickness. A damaged delivery is a seller issue, not a cue to force the ram.
Is a RIDGID worth ten times the price?
It can be, for a workshop that repeatedly bends nominal-bore steel to BS EN 10255 and already has people allowed to do that work. UK trade sites had the HB382 from about £1,124 to £1,595 including VAT on 21 October 2026, at about 72 kg. It is a poor exchange for a one-off gate, and it does not make gas installation legal for a householder.
