Pallet collar buying guide

Updated: 23 October 2026

You have a pallet in a shed, a workshop, or the back of a van, and a search for a pallet frame has mixed wooden collars with products that only borrow the word. This pallet collar buying guide is the order of checks before a price: measure the deck, read the centimetres on the listing, then ask whether the wood will leave Great Britain or sit in soil. The three wooden frames in the [pallet frame comparison](/hub/diy-supplies/pallet-frame) are the only listings this page uses. Those amazon.co.uk captures were read on 21 October 2026. We did not laboratory-test the timber. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What you are actually buying

A pallet frame here is a hinged wooden rectangle that sits on a pallet and turns the deck into an open box. British trade catalogues call that a pallet collar. It is not the pallet itself. Picture frames, floor beds and plastic platforms were left out. What remains is three folding pine frames under the brand attribute MBDRKVGF. None of them is a plastic collar, and a fixed crate does not fold flat. Voltage, a cup capacity or grow domes are stray catalogue fields. On the black 120 x 80 cm listing the material attribute says Polyester while the bullets say solid pine. Keep the pine claim. If the title says euro and the size disagrees, the size line wins. That split is the euro pallet collar or UK pallet collar page.

Footprint, then height

Measure the deck, not the title. EPAL’s euro pallet is 800 mm by 1,200 mm, which sellers write as 120 by 80 cm. UK collar catalogues commonly use 1,200 by 1,000 mm, and 800 by 600 mm for a half-euro. Of the three listings kept here, only one states 120 by 80 cm. The other two state 150 by 50 cm, which is neither euro nor UK. Height comes second, and only after the footprint matches. Trade collars are often about 195 mm high per tier. The black listing states a board height of 19.5 cm and a thickness of 20 mm, in a pack of two. The brown and grey listings print a 41 cm dimension and do not state a board height. A garden stack belongs on the pallet collar raised bed page, not in a guess from set of two.

Hinges, and what the pack is not

You want galvanised hinges that fold the frame flat. All three listings say they fold. They do not describe locating lugs, so do not assume the frame hooks over the pallet edge the way some trade collars do. If a hinge arrives bent, stop. Do not hammer it square. Set of 2 means two frames, not a pallet or a lid. Item weights are 17.4 kg, 19.8 kg and 18.9 kg. Those are parcel weights, not a safe working load. A collar does not inherit the 1,500 kg figure EPAL states for a euro pallet. HSE PM15 is about pallet loads and stack height. It is not a collar-count rule.

Export mark, soil, then the price

Will this wood leave Great Britain as packaging, or will soil touch it? GOV.UK treats pallet collars as wood packaging. When solid wood moves between Great Britain and other countries, including the EU and Switzerland, it is expected to meet ISPM 15: debarked wood, a set treatment, and a mark you can see. Heat treatment in that schedule is 56 °C for at least 30 minutes through the core. None of the three listings states a mark. Heat treatment is not a preservative. Untreated timber in soil has a shorter life than pressure-treated sleepers. Compare pounds only after the footprint fits. On 21 October 2026 the saved listings showed £16.99 for each 150 by 50 cm pair. The 120 by 80 cm pair had no price, and no star ratings were printed. A low price on the wrong footprint is not a saving. When the size matches, the next job is fitting.

Common questions

Is a pallet frame the same thing as a pallet collar?
In British trade language, yes, when the object is a hinged timber rectangle that sits on a pallet. The search phrase pallet frame is wider than that, and it also pulls in products this comparison removed. On this page the phrase means the collar. If the listing is a picture frame, a bed, or a plastic platform, it is a different purchase and it does not belong in this size check.
Does the price include the pallet and a lid?
No. These Amazon packs are pairs of frames. A pallet is not in the box, and a lid is not described as included. Trade sellers such as BiGDUG sell lids as a separate item. Add a strap or wrap to the budget if the goods need to stay inside the collar on a journey. The headline price is the frames only, even when the title sounds like a complete kit.
When does ISPM 15 matter for a collar I will only use in a UK shed?
It does not, for wood that stays in Great Britain as storage. ISPM 15 matters when solid wood packaging, including pallet collars, moves between Great Britain and other countries. None of the three listings states the mark. Using one in a dry UK shed is a domestic storage decision. Shipping it as packaging is a different decision, and these listings do not support that second use.
Are trade prices ex VAT, and how does that compare with £16.99?
Often the trade figure is ex VAT, and delivery is extra. Universal Pallets’ £15.50 new euro collar does not clearly state VAT. BiGDUG’s from-price carries an ex VAT cue. The £16.99 Amazon pairs are shelf prices for 150 by 50 cm frames, not for an 800 by 1,200 mm collar. Add VAT and delivery to the trade quote before you call one cheaper, and only compare them if both footprints fit your pallet.
How many collars do I need if each one is about 195 mm high?
One collar is one tier of about 195 mm on the usual trade pattern, and the black listing’s stated board height is 19.5 cm. Two tiers are about 39 cm, a shallow box rather than a deep bin. Buy the tiers the goods actually need, after the footprint matches. The 150 by 50 cm listings do not state a board height, so do not assume their 41 cm dimension is that same tier.
