How to pack moving boxes

Updated: 23 October 2026

The carton is on the floor, the books are still on the shelf, and the base is the part that fails if you fill first and tape later. This is how to pack moving boxes you already have, whether that is a flat-pack carton from the [Moving boxes comparison](/hub/diy-supplies/moving-boxes) or a zip bag for bedding. You will tape the empty base, put dense things in the smaller carton, and stop while you can still hold the load against your body. Products Compared did not load these packs in a lab. The steps use UK removal guides and the review complaints in the capture, checked on 21 October 2026. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Tape the carton before it has anything in it

These cardboard packs do not include tape, so you need a roll of strong brown packing tape before you fold the first base. Set the carton up on a clear floor. Close the bottom flaps so they meet. Run one strip along the centre seam, then a strip across each end so the tape forms an H that ties the flaps to the sides. Press the tape down with your hand. Add a second strip along the seam if the board is the SafariPak or Best House type, because those reviews say a single strip on the base is not enough and that extra tape is what held boxes at about 10–15 kg. Turn the carton over and push the bottom from inside. If a flap breathes, retape before any weight goes in. A zip bag has no seam to tape. Close the zip only after the soft load is in.

What goes in which container

Plates, glass, and books stay in cartons. Duvets, clothes, and towels can go in a moving bag. For plates, use the smaller carton you have. BANKERS BOX at 39 litres is harder to overload than a 47 litre carton sold as large. SafariPak reviews say heavy plates are the wrong fill for that board even though the stated breaking strength is 20 kg. Books get their own small carton, not the biggest box in the room. Lay heavy books flat. Smith Packaging’s habit is about 15 kg. Pickfords’ habit for its large carton is about 10 kg. A bag takes the bedding that would waste a carton. Keep sharp objects out of the bag.

Weight, handles, and labels

Lift a finished carton once, close to your body, with a clear view of the floor. If you cannot see over the top, it is already too heavy. The Health and Safety Executive sets no legal maximum. Do not pack up to a 20 kg or 25 kg field, or a bag bullet of 30 kg, 50 kg, or 70 kg. If a handle hole starts to tear, put the carton down and move the weight into a second carton. SafariPak reviews describe holes that tear, and MR.KIANGCI has a report of stitching failing at about 21 kg. Label the room on two sides, and keep tape off a printed checklist. Mark fragile only on glass or plates. A clear bag still needs a room name.

When you stop and get help

Stop and split the carton when one person cannot hold it against their body on flat ground. Call a removal firm for stairs plus many heavy cartons, or for a piano, a safe, or a stone worktop. The Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 matter when this packing is paid work. They do not set a kilogram you can ignore at home. If the carton was the wrong size, more tape will not fix it. Change size or format using the moving boxes buying guide before you buy another ten. Bags do not become the answer for plates because the zip closed.

Common questions

How do I tape the bottom?
Fold the flaps, run tape along the centre seam, then across both ends so the strips form an H, and press it flat. Add another strip on the seam for the thinner boards in this set. SafariPak reviews say the base needs more than one strip before a 10–15 kg fill holds. Test the empty base with your hand. These packs do not include the tape.
Where do books go?
In a small carton, heavy volumes flat, and not in the largest 47 litre box. Smith Packaging’s habit is about 15 kg. Pickfords’ habit for a large carton is about 10 kg. A2B’s double-wall book box is their recommendation, not a printed fact about SafariPak or Best House. If the carton already feels heavy at waist height, split it.
How heavy is too heavy?
Too heavy is a carton you cannot hold against your body without blocking your view, whatever the listing prints. HSE publishes no legal cap for a domestic lift. Company habits sit around 10–15 kg for book and large cartons. A stated 20 kg or 25 kg, and bag bullets of 30–70 kg, are seller figures. They are not the weight to aim for.
How should I label a carton with a room checklist?
Tick the printed room if the carton has one, then write the same room on a second face in marker so tape cannot hide the only copy. Put the label on before the carton goes into a stack. Use fragile only for glass and plates. A clear storage bag still gets a room name, because a see-through panel does not name the bedroom.
What if the handle hole starts to tear?
Put the carton down. Bridge the tear with tape so it cannot run, and move some of the weight into another carton before you lift it again. SafariPak, Best House, and StorePAK reviews all describe handle damage under heavy fills. Carrying on by the torn hole is how the side splits. On a bag, stop if the stitching is pulling out, as in the MR.KIANGCI note around 21 kg.
