Safety matches buying guide

Updated: 23 October 2026

You are looking at an amazon.co.uk page that says extra long or 100 boxes, and the specification block is quieter than the title. A safety matches buying guide has to settle the length, the number of boxes, and the brand field before a star rating is allowed to decide. The five rows in the [Matches comparison](/hub/diy-supplies/matches) were captured on 21 October 2026. This page is the order of that decision, from those listings and public UK sources. There is no laboratory strike test. A qualifying purchase through our amazon.co.uk links can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

What you are actually buying

A safety match in this set is a wooden stick meant to light on the strip of its own box. The oxidiser is on the head and the red phosphorus is on the strip, so a wall or a brick is the wrong surface. BS EN 1783:1997, with amendment A1:2002, covers safety, performance, classification and marking. None of these five listings shows a certificate, so safety matches names a product type, not a test report. The White Phosphorus Matches Prohibition Act 1908 banned white-phosphorus matches. These titles are not strike-anywhere matches, and an unanswered waterproof question is not a storm-match feature. A firelighter, a striker sticker and an empty holder are not in the table. The choice here is a stated household stick of about 94 mm to 10 cm, or a bulk whose millimetres are not printed. That split is extra long matches versus standard boxes. Extra long on these titles is not an 11 inch fireside match.

Length, count and price

The job comes first. A sunken wick, a lantern or the back of a log burner wants a stated extra-long safety match, so your fingers do not follow the flame. A kitchen drawer can live with a shorter box. On the bulk, shorter is how reviewers describe the sticks. The listing does not print a length. The pack of two is about £2.00, about 94 mm (3.75 inches) and about 45 a pack. Wynnstay’s trade page gives 9.4 cm and 45 sticks. That is a shop listing, not an amazon.co.uk price. The five-box row at about £7.99 says 95 mm. Do not count the added small box as a sixth long pack. The row at about £8.75 says 10 cm and about 45, and one review measured 90 mm against an expected 15 cm. Do not average those figures. The 100-box bulk is about £6.88, about 7p a box if you divide by 100, a rule of thumb. The single box at about £2.99 lists a carton of 7 × 4 × 2.3 cm and 20 g. That carton is not the stick.

What the listing does not say

A star line will not fill a blank field. The larger files are 4.7. The single box is 5.0 from two reviews with no text. A perfect score from two silent reviews is a thinner fact than 4.7 from more than a thousand people. A best-sellers line that includes 1 in Car Starters is a browse position, not a reason to buy the bulk for a car. Three titles say Bryant & May, and Swedish Match owns that brand. Only one row names Swedish Match Company as manufacturer. The pack of two puts EMBO in the brand and manufacturer fields, and Hickory in scent, which the title never describes. The dearest five-box row names Blissify and Sweden. Keep the mismatch visible. Do not turn it into a counterfeit claim. Waterproof, windproof and wind-resistant are asked and not answered. A blank is not a feature.

A short decision

If the flame has to reach a wick in a jar, or kindling at the back of a stove, buy a row that states a length. In this capture that is about 94 mm, 95 mm, or a 10 cm bullet whose reviews include a 90 mm measurement. If you want a drawer full of ordinary boxes, and a short stick is acceptable, the 100-box bulk is the price argument, with the thin-stem complaints left in view. If the stove sits in a smoke control area, the match only lights the fire. The fuel rules are on long matches for a wood burner, and a longer stick does not change them.

Common questions

How long is an extra-long match in this set?
In these amazon.co.uk listings, extra long means a stated household stick, not a fireside spill. The pack of two says about 94 mm, or 3.75 inches. One five-box bullet says 95 mm. Another says 10 cm, and one review of that listing says the matches received were 90 mm. The 100-box bulk and the single box do not state a length at all. A 280 mm fireside match sold by stove shops is a different product and is not one of these five rows.
How many matches are in the box?
The extra-long listings that give a figure say about 45 a pack. About is the word on the page, so it is not a guaranteed piece count. The 100-box bulk does not state a count. One buyer who counted many of those boxes reported an average of 38–39, and another mentioned about 37. Those are reviews, not the specification. The single box states neither a count nor a length. The package line of 7 × 4 × 2.3 cm only describes the carton.
Are these waterproof or windproof?
No listing in this set states that the matches are waterproof, windproof or wind-resistant. Where the page asks the question, it leaves the answer blank. A blank is not a feature. If rain or a draught is the problem you are solving, these household safety matches are the wrong product, and a storm match is outside this comparison.
Is the brand on the title the brand in the specification?
Often it is not. The pack of two names EMBO as brand and manufacturer, and Hickory as a scent the title does not describe. The five-box row at about £8.75 names Blissify, with Sweden as the origin. Riverbank Retail is the brand field on the about £7.99 pack, and that row alone names Swedish Match Company as manufacturer. Treat the clash as a listing conflict. It is not proof of a fake.
Is a 5.0 from two reviews better than a 4.7 from 1,627?
No. The single box is 5.0 from two reviews, and the file contains no review text, so you cannot see what those two people struck, snapped or stored. The bulk is 4.7 from 1,627 reviews. The pack of two is 4.7 from 752, and the 95 mm five-box row is 4.7 from 854. A larger file tells you more about thin stems, worn strips and short added boxes. Stars this close do not outrank a stated length.
Do I need a 280 mm fireside match instead?
You might, and it will not be one of these listings. Robeys lists fireside safety matches around 280 mm, about 90 sticks. Woodabrix describes a 10 cm safety match as about half the length of its longer fireside match. If the firebox needs that reach, buy it from a stove supplier. If 94 mm to 10 cm lights a firelighter without your hand in the flame, the extra-long rows here are the ones that state it.
