Recessed or solid manhole cover

Updated: 23 October 2026

You are about to pave across an inspection chamber, or you would rather keep a lid you can find in the lawn. A recessed or solid manhole cover is that finish choice, once the clear opening is measured and a car is not what decides it. A recessed tray is a shallow lid you fill so the slabs continue. A solid lid stays visible and is the simpler lift. The [manhole cover comparison](/hub/diy-supplies/manhole-cover) splits the amazon.co.uk rows that way. Choose a tray when the surface has to continue

Choose a recessed tray when the paving has to continue and you have measured the clear opening with the old lid off. The tray is a frame and a lid with a recess. You bed slab, block, or a concrete skim in it so the patio reads as one surface. The Natotela aluminium tray, B0F9KRJ3MB, costs £69.99 and states a 200 x 200 mm clear opening with 45 mm of depth. A 60 mm porcelain slab will not finish flush in a 45 mm recess. EcoGrid’s rule is that the tray must accept the unit. The tonchean B0G25HSZJF states a 60 mm frame height. Frame height is not the recess you drop the slab into. A review on the £69.99 tray says the lid is not lockable and does not sit flush.

Choose a solid lid when you need to see it and lift it

Choose a solid lid when the cover has to stay obvious and you want to lift it without breaking out paving. The Natotela FRP lid, B0CVVVM2WB, is £19.99, stated at 300 x 300 mm and 3.84 kg. The bullets say up to 1.5 tonnes, without printing B125. If the opening is about 300 mm and no car will cross it, this is the best value cover-and-frame in the set. Skip Natotela B0DXDZCJRT when a light lift was the reason you avoided a tray. It costs £139.99, states a 625 mm clear opening, and weighs 30 kg. One bullet pairs A15 with light vehicles. A15 is the pedestrian group in JDP’s account of BS EN 124, and 30 kg is the heaviest empty weight here.

The tray gets heavier, and it can flex

The kilogram on the listing is the empty cover. Slabs or concrete make the later lift heavier. The Health and Safety Executive sets no single kilogram limit. The 200 mm aluminium tray is listed at 2.2 kg empty, so fill the tray after the frame is bedded rather than carrying a paved lid. One shared review says an aluminium cover flexes and the mesh is loose under a rigid finish. That file is copied across sizes, so it does not prove every tray bends. A brittle porcelain slab can crack if the lid moves. If a car or a van will cross the chamber, read the manhole cover for a driveway page first. A 125 tonnes (B125) bullet is not a Kitemark. JDP puts B125 at 125 kN, about 12.5 tonnes.

Neither of these is the indoor sealed cover

Neither a recessed tray nor a solid lid in this set is the indoor sealed cover. Approved Document H says a cover inside a building should be fixed and airtight unless the drain is already watertight there. These amazon.co.uk files rarely name a rubber seal. A slab over the garden chamber does not stop drain air reaching a kitchen along the pipe. Outdoors, start with the £69.99 tray when the hole is about 200 mm, the depth can take the slab, and you do not need a lock. At about 300 mm, with the lid meant to stay visible and no car, choose the £19.99 FRP cover and leave the 30 kg lid.

Common questions

When do I choose a recessed tray?
Choose a recessed tray when paving has to continue over a chamber you have measured. You fill the shallow lid so the surface reads as one plane. Natotela B0F9KRJ3MB states a 200 mm opening and 45 mm of depth at £69.99, so a thicker slab stands proud. A review says that lid is not lockable and does not sit flush. A different opening needs another recessed row.
When do I choose a solid lid?
Choose a solid lid when you need to see the cover and lift it without chipping out paving. The £19.99 Natotela FRP cover is stated at 300 x 300 mm and 3.84 kg, for a garden or path with no car on the 1.5 tonne sentence. The £139.99 fibreglass cover is also solid, at 30 kg and a 625 mm opening. Leave it if you wanted a light lid. SHMOX plastics are riser caps and include no frame.
Will the tray be heavier later?
Yes. The kilogram on amazon.co.uk is the empty cover. Slabs, blocks, or concrete in the recess add to every lift. The 200 mm aluminium tray is listed at 2.2 kg empty and weighs more once a slab is concreted in. The Health and Safety Executive publishes no single kilogram limit. Fill the tray in place.
How deep does the tray need to be?
Deep enough for the slab or block and the bedding under it. EcoGrid’s rule is that a shallow tray cannot take the unit, while a deep tray can be packed out. B0F9KRJ3MB states 45 mm of depth. Tonchean B0G25HSZJF states a 60 mm frame height, which is not the recess. One specialist range quotes about 48 mm of tray in a 60 mm cover, and that range is not these listings.
Will either type stop smells indoors?
No. These patio trays and solid garden lids are not shown as fixed airtight covers. Approved Document H says an internal cover should be fixed and airtight unless the drain is already watertight there. Slabs over the outside chamber do not seal the pipe into the house. An indoor smell needs that cover, or a drain already watertight, rather than a recessed patio lid.
