Gutter guard buying guide

Updated: 23 October 2026

You are in the garden with a downpipe that has stopped taking water, and a phone full of listings that all say leaf guard. Some are balloons you push into the outlet. One is a plastic roll that lies along the trough. A gutter guard buying guide has to start with that split, because a star rating cannot tell you which opening you have. This page is the order of checks before the [gutter protection comparison](/hub/diy-supplies/gutter-protection). The saved amazon.co.uk listings are from 21 October 2026. This is not a lab test of flow. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Two jobs, not one product

A gutter guard either keeps debris out of the downpipe or tries to keep debris out of the trough. Water over the front lip, while the pipe is still running, is a trough problem. A gutter that fills at the outlet, while a water butt stays dry, is a pipe problem. An outlet insert sits in the hole and leaves the trough to fill. A trough cover is the other job, and moss can still mat on top. If you are choosing the roll or a balloon, use gutter mesh or balloon.

What to measure on a UK house

Measure the outlet, not the downpipe you can see from the lawn. The opening the guard has to enter, in millimetres, and whether it is round or square, is the figure that matters. Osma's RoundLine manual puts the outside of a nominal 68 mm circular pipe at about 68.3–68.7 mm. That is the system name. The hole can still differ. FloPlast's common half-round is a gutter about 112 mm wide with a 68 mm round downpipe. That is typical, not a measurement of your outlet. A trade balloon can print 65 mm square and 68 mm round together. Merriway states 68 mm round only. Do not borrow the square line. The sums are on the 68 mm downpipe leaf guard page.

What the saved listings actually claim

Seven listings stayed. Prices are the saved amazon.co.uk figures from 21 October 2026, not a live check, and they run from £5.25 to £11.99. Up to 7.5 cm is 75 mm and still does not print 68 mm. A 2.4–2.6 inch dome is about 61–66 mm. A 45 mm cap is not a 68 mm downpipe. Two files contradict themselves. Graplan's title and components line disagree on the piece count. Katai's title says 2–4 inch and another field says 2 inches. Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, section 11, goods should match the description.

Stars, price, and what to skip

Stars on amazon.co.uk are not a lab score. Merriway is 4.4 from 1,118 reviews and LAOJU is 4.5 from 516. A 5.0 from one review, or from two, does not beat that sample. The comparison score caps a count under 10 at 60 and a count under 25 at 75. Katai is 3.6 from 22, stored as 72, and three saved texts do not explain the other 19 ratings. Skip a size line that cannot meet the hole. Price comes after the size matches. This page does not rank them.

When a guard is the wrong purchase

A guard is the wrong purchase when the gutter has already failed. A joint that has pulled off, a rotten fascia, or water already indoors is not a leaf-balloon job. If the only way up is a ladder rested on plastic gutter, stop. The Health and Safety Executive says not to rest a ladder on plastic gutters, and to avoid work at height where you can. If the roof may be asbestos cement, call someone.

Common questions

What do I measure before I order a gutter guard?
Measure the opening the guard has to enter, in millimetres, and note whether it is round or square. The outside of a nominal 68 mm pipe is not the same figure as the hole. If you are buying a roll, also measure the gutter width. FloPlast's common half-round is about 112 mm wide with a 68 mm round downpipe, which is a typical system, not a measurement of your house.
Is a balloon the same as a mesh roll?
No. A balloon or an aluminium strainer sits in the downpipe outlet and leaves the trough to fill. A mesh roll lies in the trough and can mat over so water spills at the front. In this set only the DIVCHI roll, 5 m by 15 cm with eight stakes, is a trough cover. They do not do each other's job.
Does a 5-star rating with one review beat 4.4 from over a thousand?
No. DIVCHI is 5.0 from one amazon.co.uk review, and no review text is saved. Merriway is 4.4 from 1,118 reviews. The comparison score caps a count under 10 at 60 so a lone 5.0 cannot outrank that sample. Stars are not a flow test. A high star line on a pack whose title and components disagree is still a description problem.
Do I still have to clean the gutter?
Yes. A balloon does not empty the trough, and reviewers say its slots need checking. Aluminium mesh clogs and has to be cleared. A mesh roll can hold moss on top. Trade pages suggest washing a system balloon every six to twelve months. That interval is their advice for a different part, not a result from these listings. Nothing here is maintenance-free.
What if the title and the components line disagree?
Treat that as a reason to pause. Graplan's title says six guards and six zip ties, and the components line says four protections and four pull rings. The file does not say which arrived. Katai's title says 2–4 inch and another field says 2 inches. Section 11 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 is about goods matching the description. Count the pieces on arrival, and do not order if you need the count settled first.
