Graphite powder vs WD-40 for locks

Updated: 23 October 2026

The euro cylinder on the back door is stiff, and the familiar blue can is already on the shelf. Graphite powder vs WD-40 locks is a chemistry choice with a brand limit on both sides. Standard WD-40, the water-displacing spray, is the wrong can for that keyway. Graphite is the dry film only when that cylinder's maker says so. If the maker names a different dry lube, both the blue can and the puff are wrong. The [graphite powder comparison](/hub/diy-supplies/graphite-powder) is the product grid. Peter F. checked maker care notes and the amazon.co.uk lines captured on 21 October 2026. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you.

What the familiar spray actually does

WD-40 on this page means the standard multi-purpose water-displacing spray, unless a tin is clearly labelled Specialist or another named formula. The standard can leaves a thin wet film. It is not sold as a lock-cylinder lubricant. Keytek's security note says standard WD-40 is not a lock lubricant, that it can strip existing lubricant, and that the residue attracts dirt. APECS says never use WD-40 on an APECS lock. Dust sticks to oil, and the key starts to grind. UK reviews of Pressol and Kasp often start after a water-displacing spray had made the lock stickier. That pattern is not a repair method.

When graphite is the specified dry film

Graphite is specified when the maker's page says graphite and the keyway is dry. Ultion's lubricant page tells you to use its graphite and not oils or WD-40, with a six-month routine. The Lution XM bullets repeat that line, at about £11.80. Lockshop Warehouse's page says wet oil can void the Ultion guarantee. That is not a universal UK statute. Avocet's ABS powder is a light dusting, about every six months, and about every three months on the coast. Hardwick's Sentry+ page is two short bursts, about every six months. The pattern is a dry graphite product, a small dose, an interval, and a ban on general oil.

When graphite is also the wrong product

APECS is the clear skip. Their care note says never use WD-40, and do not use graphite on APECS cylinders either. The product they name is APECS dry lube. Keytek lists graphite as one dry option, says it is messy, and prefers a dry PTFE lubricant for some modern locks. That preference does not cancel Ultion's instruction to use graphite on an Ultion lock. Safer than WD-40, for a given cylinder, is whatever that maker printed. Electronic and smart locks sit outside both products. Graphite is conductive. A water-displacing spray is a solvent near plastics and circuits. Neither belongs in a housing opened without the maker's sheet.

Do not mix them

If the keyway is already oily, do not puff graphite into it. The powder sticks to the film and the pins see a paste. Home Secure's graphite note says not to add graphite on top of oil. There is no step here for washing WD-40 out of a euro cylinder with another aerosol. When the leaflet allows graphite and the keyway is dry, use one light dose and wipe, as how to use graphite powder on a lock describes. When you do not know the brand, start with the graphite powder buying guide. When you only have the blue can, leave it for a hinge pin, away from the cylinder.

Common questions

Can I use WD-40 in a euro cylinder?
Not the standard water-displacing spray. Keytek says it is not a lock lubricant and that the residue attracts dirt. APECS says never use it on an APECS lock. Ultion's lubricant page tells you not to use WD-40. A key that frees for an afternoon can grind once dust sticks to the film. Use the dry product the cylinder maker names, in a small amount, on a dry keyway. The blue can is a poor default for a euro cylinder even when you do not know the brand yet.
Should I use graphite or a PTFE dry spray?
Use the one the cylinder maker names. Ultion, Avocet ABS, Hardwick and the AC Leigh cylinder note in this research specify graphite, with their own dose and interval. APECS specifies APECS dry lube and rejects graphite. Keytek prefers dry PTFE for some modern locks and still lists graphite as a messy option. A PTFE spray is not a free substitute for a graphite instruction, and graphite is not a free substitute for a PTFE instruction. If the sheet is missing, ask before you pick the can you already own.
What does APECS want?
APECS wants you to avoid WD-40 and to avoid graphite on APECS cylinders. Their care note points to APECS dry lube. Kasp, Pressol, Lution and the 5.0 nozzle bottles in this comparison are the wrong shelf for that brand, however many reviews they have. Do not test a small amount to see. The ban is the instruction. If a fitter fitted an APECS cylinder and left no leaflet, the brand name on the cylinder is enough to look up that note before you lubricate.
What does Ultion want?
Ultion wants its graphite lubricant, not oils or WD-40, on the interval their page describes, about twice a year in the Lution bullets. The amazon.co.uk Lution XM listing is about £11.80 in this capture and repeats that approval line. Guarantee wording about wet oil sits on Ultion's page and on the Lockshop Warehouse note, not in a general comparison. If your lock is not an Ultion, that approval does not transfer. Use the sheet for the brand you actually have.
I already sprayed oil. Should I add graphite?
No. Graphite on a wet film makes a paste in the pin stack. Do not add a puff to dry it out, and do not chase the oil with another spray. Tell a locksmith which can you used. If the lock is under a maker guarantee that mentions oil or WD-40, read that page before you assume the damage is only stickiness. One light dose of graphite is for a dry keyway the maker already allows, not for a cylinder you have just soaked.
