Glazing packers buying guide

Updated: 23 October 2026

You are standing in front of a mixed bag of plastic shims, and the listing could mean a window, a door, or a shed base. A glazing packers buying guide starts with the gap and the rebate, not the brand on the bag. Measure the opening and the width of the glass or the frame, then match shape and thickness. The [glazing blocks comparison](/hub/diy-supplies/glazing-blocks) ranks the eleven amazon.co.uk listings in this set. This page is the check before you pick a row. Prices are the captured shelf prices in GBP. Peter F. checked those listings. This is not a lab test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Width before brand

Width is the first cut, because a packer that is too narrow loads one pane of a sealed unit. UK merchants often sell flats at 100 mm long and 24, 28, 30, or 32 mm wide. Glazpart says a setting block should support both panes. VEKA’s Norscot guide uses a 30 mm packer under a 28 mm unit. In this set, 28 × 100 mm is on EVOGES, Eleechen, the HuangXinyu 72-piece set, and Vurixfo. The FUX 100-piece set is 100 × 24 mm. Yonfas says 28 × 100 mm in the title and 1 × 2 × 3 cm in the dimensions field. The 60 × 40 mm packs are general shims unless the rebate accepts them. Widths of 30 mm and 32 mm are not in this amazon set.

Thickness and colour

Everyday thicknesses run from 1 mm to 6 mm. Measure the gap with the frame central and the expansion clearance there. Eurocell’s Logik steps use 5 mm as the gap to keep while you pack. A 1–6 mm mix does not contain a 10 mm or a 20 mm piece. The FUX 40-piece set is the only listing whose bullets run from 1.5 mm to 20 mm. HuangXinyu’s 80-piece set, HXC, and Spesh stop at 10 mm and skip 2 mm and 4 mm. The U-shaped title says 1.5/3/5/10 mm while the bullets list extra sizes, including 3.2 mm and 6.4 mm. Colour is not a British Standard, and brands do not share one map.

How many pieces

This set runs from 40 pieces to 138. EVOGES is 42, seven of each from 1 mm to 6 mm. Eleechen and the HuangXinyu 100 × 28 mm set are 72. One door often uses the 3 mm and 5 mm pieces first. A weekly fitter wants a merchant tub of hundreds, which these listings are not. On 21 October 2026 Screwfix showed 225 pieces at £14.99 including VAT, and Discount Trade Supplies showed 200 mixed pieces at £7.19 including VAT. Those are context, not rows. At the captured prices, Eleechen is about 8 pence a piece and the thick FUX set about 41 pence.

Material and what not to claim

Polypropylene is named on the FUX, Eleechen, and HuangXinyu listings. Vurixfo states polyethylene. HXC and the U-shaped pack state PVC. Yonfas, EVOGES, and Spesh say plastic without a polymer. The Glass and Glazing Federation asks packers to resist compression, rot, and corrosion, and to stay beside the fixings. Plastic meets the rot point better than a timber wedge in a damp reveal. None of these listings prints a load in newtons. Nothing here is certified to BS 8213-4, BS 6262, or FENSA. A groove sold as a ventilation channel is a listing claim, not a bridge packer.

Common questions

What width do I need for a normal uPVC window?
For a typical double-glazed unit, UK component notes point you to a packer that supports both panes, often around 28 mm wide and about 100 mm long. VEKA’s example is a 30 mm packer under a 28 mm unit. A 24 mm piece can miss the second pane. Confirm the width on the system diagram, because 30 mm and 32 mm flats exist in the trade and are not in this amazon set.
Is 1–6 mm enough, or do I need 10 mm?
A 1–6 mm mix is the everyday glazing range in this set, when the frame is already close to square. It is not enough for an 8–15 mm void under a shed base or a deep pack at a hinge. The FUX 40-piece set goes to 20 mm, and three other listings stop at 10 mm. Stacking two thin flats will not invent a thickness the bag does not contain.
Does green always mean 1 mm?
No. A common merchant map uses green for 1 mm and red for 6 mm, and the same merchants say brands differ. Vurixfo’s own bullets use grey for 1 mm and black for 6 mm. HXC and Spesh use red for 1.5 mm and green for 10 mm. Measure, or read a size moulded on the piece. An Eleechen reviewer lost track of the colours, and that listing does not print a map.
Does the plastic type change the buy?
Polypropylene, polyethylene, and PVC are each named on at least one listing here. All three resist rot better than a timber wedge in a damp reveal. The Glass and Glazing Federation asks for resistance to compression as well, and none of these listings prints a load in newtons. Where the polymer line is blank, as on EVOGES, Yonfas, and Spesh, you are buying an unnamed plastic at the size in the title.
How many pieces do I need for one door?
A single door, packed beside the fixings and at the hinges and locks, often uses well under 42 pieces if you have a spread of 1–6 mm. EVOGES gives you seven of each. You will use the 3 mm and 5 mm pieces first. A second opening, or a fitter’s week, is a larger tub. These amazon packs top out at 138 pieces, and several of the high counts have only a handful of ratings.
