Fondue burner gel for a home set

Updated: 23 October 2026

The tin in the basket is a 12-pack of chafing cans, and the burner on the table is a small cup under a cheese pot. Fondue burner gel is the small paste, often about 80 g, that sits in that cup for one meal. A 3.5 hour buffet can is the wrong object. This page stays with fit, heat and leftover gel. Prices are on our [fuel paste comparison](/hub/diy-supplies/fuel-paste). Peter F. used the amazon.co.uk listings and UK supplier notes, not a lab cook. The pot, not the buffet can

A fondue burner is a short flame under one pot. The paste that matches it here is Till Brennpaste, ASIN B07N6BDG7W, at about £13.00, with pots of about 9 cm and a claimed minimum of 45–60 minutes per 80 g. ZSP’s cans claim 3.5 hours and Sterling Saver’s claim 210 minutes. METRO’s can is about 85 mm across. Do not put it in the cup because the diameter looks close. Reviewers often say Till pots fit a Le Creuset stand. Another buyer had to decant because an older cup was too small. If 9 cm will not go in, this ASIN is the wrong pot.

What Till’s listing does and does not say

Across 2,206 amazon.co.uk reviews the Till line is 4.5, the largest sample here, which is why it is the fondue pick on best fondue gel fuel, with conditions. This ASIN does not name the fuel. Another Till ASIN does. Read the pot when it arrives, and do not light it if the hazard label is blank. The pack count is unsettled. The title says 6 × 80 g, two pack, and other fields say 54 pieces and 6 packs. The about £13.00 figure is the stored shelf price, not a price per pot. Treat an hour as a plan for one course, not as a clock we verified.

Cheese, chocolate and oil

Till reviewers say the gel runs hot for cheese and for chocolate, and that it suits a meat fondue in oil once the oil has been heated on the hob. You heat the oil on the cooker, bring it to the stand, and the gel holds it. A cheese pot that goes on cold, under a fully open flame, scorches at the bottom while the top is still pale. Boska’s notes are the control. Light with the air holes open, give the set about 5–10 minutes, then leave the holes only slightly open. Closing them kills the flame. Leaving them wide open overcooks cheese and chocolate. The set is not left unattended, and children do not use the burner. Boska also warns that ordinary tealights are often too weak for a fondue set. If the stand has no air control, do not slide a second pot underneath.

Leftovers and a dried pot

Reviewers mention pressing foil over leftover gel. That is a cover, not a second fuel. If the pot’s own lid is intact, use that once the flame is out and the pot has cooled. Smothering, and the wait of at least 15 minutes, is on how to use chafing fuel gel. A Till review added white spirit to a dried pot and described a climbing flame and black smoke. Do not wake a dead pot with white spirit, meths or cooking alcohol. If the gel has dried, that dinner’s fuel is finished. A leftover chafing can does not become fondue fuel. The evening works when the paste pot fits, the oil or cheese is already hot from the hob, and the air holes are nearly closed.

Common questions

How long does an 80 g fondue paste last?
Till’s listing claims a minimum of 45–60 minutes for an 80 g pot. That is the seller’s figure. In the captured reviews, one pot was done in about 30 minutes and others still had gel after the meal. Plan one course, stay with the burner, and do not treat the claim as a time we measured on your stand.
Will it fit my burner?
Till lists a diameter of about 9 cm, and many reviewers say that fits a Le Creuset or a similar household burner. Another buyer of this style of pot had to decant because an older cup was too small. Measure the cup. If the pot will not seat, do not pour the gel into a random dish so that you can light it loose.
Why did the cheese scorch?
Reviewers say this gel is hot for cheese and chocolate. A fully open air hole keeps a large flame under a pot that was not hot when you started. Heat cheese gently, or heat oil on the hob first for a meat fondue, and leave the burner holes only slightly open after the first few minutes. If the stand has no air control, this pot is a strong flame with no damper.
Can I use a chafing can in the fondue stand?
Do not. ZSP, Sterling Saver and METRO are cans for a warmer or a chafing dish. Their burn claims run to about 2.5–3.5 hours, and their shape is not the 80 g fondue pot. Forcing a can into the cup, or standing it beside the pot, is a different fire from the one the stand was built to cover. Use a paste pot that seats properly.
Is Till ethanol?
Not on this ASIN. B07N6BDG7W does not name a fuel. A different Till listing does name ethanol, and that is a different page. When the pots arrive, read the label. If it does not name a fuel you are willing to burn under food, do not light it because the brand matched a review.
