Fire door self closer: what a tensioner is not

Updated: 23 October 2026

Adjustable tensioner on an amazon.co.uk listing is not permission to alter a flat entrance door. A fire door self closer has to shut the leaf from the angles a check actually uses, and in England residents must not tamper with the closer already there. A coil that pulls a garden gate shut has no power size. This page reads that check, then the line on each listing in the [Door tensioner](/hub/diy-supplies/door-tensioner) comparison. Peter F. used GOV.UK and the listings on 22 October 2026 and did not certify a door. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

The check is two releases, not a new spring

GOV.UK's fire-door guidance for England is two releases. Open the door fully and let go. Then open it to about 15 degrees and let go. Both times it must close into the frame. If it stops short or only shuts when you shove it, the remedy is not a second spring from a marketplace search. Residents must not tamper with the closer. Taking it off, wedging the door, or screwing a garden coil beside it is not a repair. Report what the two releases did. Coil fitting stays on the how to fit a gate spring page, and only for wooden gates.

An uncontrolled spring is outside BS EN 1154

BS EN 1154 is the standard for a controlled closer that checks the close. The fire-door hardware code says uncontrolled springs, and face-fixed jamb closers of that type, should not be used where a fire door is meant to be self-closing. A peg coil is that family. Winding it tighter does not create a power size. The Door and Hardware Federation treats fire and smoke doors from power size 3, not sizes 1 and 2. None of the gate springs prints a power size. The XFORT bullet says the chain is not for fire doors, while a specification field mentions fire safety standards. Follow the bullet.

Read the Yale lines as they are printed

The white and chrome Yale P-YSMDC closers say they are suitable for fire doors and cite a test to BS EN 1634-1, for internal doors up to 50 kg. Neither listing prints a BS EN 1154 power size. A fire-test sentence is not a power size, and half-hour on a shop page is not a classification on the amazon.co.uk listing. The Yale P-2002 prints size 3 as 60 kg and size 4 as 80 kg, plus a CE line, and no BS EN 1634-1 sentence. Do not copy the lighter closers' fire-test line across because both say Yale. The Guild of Architectural Ironmongers points to a BS EN 1154 marked unit with evidence for that door. No product in this set is the fire-door recommendation.

Report the fault. Do not add a second closer

In England, regulation 10 of the Fire Safety (England) Regulations 2022 covers buildings with two or more sets of domestic premises and common parts. Above 11 metres to the top storey, flat entrance doors are checked at least every 12 months and communal fire doors at least every 3 months, including the self-closer. That interval is not a rule for a single house. This page does not restate Scottish or Welsh fire law. Do not drill a fire door to find out. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 short-term right to reject is about a faulty product, not a closer fitted to the wrong door. Report a noisy or weak closer. A gate spring is an uncontrolled spring the hardware code tells you not to use.

Common questions

Can a garden spring go on a flat entrance door?
No. The coils in this comparison print no power size and no fire-door line. UK reviews describe gates, dogs, and wind. The hardware code says uncontrolled springs should not be used where a fire door is meant to be self-closing, because they are outside what EN 1154 is for. GOV.UK tells residents in England not to tamper with the closer. Screwing a gate spring to the frame is tampering, not a pass of the fully-open and 15-degree checks.
What is the difference between BS EN 1634-1 and BS EN 1154?
BS EN 1634-1 is a fire-resistance test method for door assemblies. A listing can say a closer was included in a successful test to that standard. BS EN 1154 is the standard for controlled door closers, including power size. The Door and Hardware Federation discusses fire and smoke doors from size 3, not sizes 1 and 2. A fire-test sentence does not print a power size, and a power size does not by itself prove the fire test.
The Yale listing says it passed a fire test. Is that a power size?
On the white and chrome P-YSMDC listings, the fire-test line is BS EN 1634-1, next to a 50 kg ceiling. There is no EN 1154 classification string on those listings. The 50 kg figure is the weight line, not a printed size 3 or size 4. Half-hour, where a retailer adds it, is their wording. One UK review of the white closer said it did not fully close an internal fire door.
What should a resident do if the closer is already failing?
Open the door fully, let go, then open it to about 15 degrees and let go. If it does not close into the frame both times, report that to the responsible person. Do not remove the closer, wedge the door, or add a gate spring while you wait. Above 11 metres to the top storey, the timed checks in those English regulations include whether the self-closer works. A second closer from this set is not the repair.
Who is allowed to change the closer?
A resident is told not to tamper. Changing the closer is for the responsible person or a competent installer, using a BS EN 1154 marked unit with evidence for that door. A coil, a chain whose bullet refuses fire doors, and a surface closer without an EN 1154 string are not that replacement. If the door is already drilled, stop and let a competent person look at the leaf.
