How to fit a toddler bed guard

Updated: 23 October 2026

The guard is already out of the box, and you want it on the bed before tonight. How to fit a toddler bed guard starts with the sheet in that box, not a screw pattern from another brand. The Child Accident Prevention Trust asks for about 250 mm clear at each end, and says not to use a guard with no instructions. Foam here also needs a day or two after you cut the vacuum bag. The listings are on the [bed border comparison](/hub/diy-supplies/bed-border). A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you. We used the stored warnings and did not time a fitting.

Read the exclusions before you assemble

Open the warnings before the first bolt. Safety 1st cannot be used on divan, bunk, youth, inflatable, water or sofa beds. It wants at least 2.5 cm of frame lip, plus a minimum 25 cm gap between the bed end and the rail. A neat assembly does not make an excluded bed suitable. Prague is for flat bases that are not recessed. Liloro is not recommended for box spring beds. Phoenix does not state divan. If the base is a divan or the mattress sits inside the frame, stop. If there are no instructions, do not use it. A video of a similar rail is not the sheet in your box. Liloro’s listing says no drilling, and a UK review says a screwdriver was required. A bunk is a stop, not a creative installation.

End gaps and a rail that meets the mattress

Plan the gaps before you tighten anything. The Child Accident Prevention Trust asks for at least 250 mm, about 25 cm, clear at each end so a child is not trapped and can still climb out. Safety 1st prints the same minimum. Once the rail is on, you should not be able to rattle it loose. On a 190 cm mattress, a 106 cm rail cannot fill the middle and still leave exactly 25 cm at both ends. Place it where the child rolls, and do not slide it tight against the headboard. A gap that is too small is an entrapment risk. The rail should meet the mattress. If it feels stiff, check the lock, then shake it.

Foam needs a night to grow

Foam in this set is not instant. Kohentact’s straight bumper asks for 24 hours in a ventilated room. ZEIXIHY and the Kohentact teardrop say 24–48 hours. YIHATA can rebound more slowly in the cold, with about 25°C cited. If you put a flat pad on the bed the same evening, you are fitting the parcel. Then it goes between the mattress and a fitted sheet. On top of the sheet it slides. A 17-month-old pushed a ZEIXIHY aside. Peekabi’s straps held in reviews, though on one double the bumper was too large to go under the sheet. BANBALOO reviews describe straps missing or snapped, and a child who fell out. If your hand moves it, a sleeping child will too.

When not to use it tonight

Stop if there are no instructions, if the listing excludes the bed, if an end gap is under about 25 cm, or if you can see a child dropping beside the rail. Do not cover the mesh with a blanket or towel. Stop if the foam is still flat, if the BANBALOO strap is broken, or if you are about to use any of these in a cot. NHS and Lullaby Trust advice is against cot bumpers. A poor manual is a reason to pause, not to guess. Until the rail is stable, leave it off for the night. If a child has already been trapped, if you are fitting a side for a disabled child or an adult in care, or if the bed is a bunk, use the MHRA guidance and the person’s clinician.

Common questions

Should the rail touch the mattress?
Yes. The panel should meet the mattress so a child cannot slip between the mesh and the bed. A diagram for a different rail is not your manual. If you can slide a fist through after you have pushed the mattress across, refit it. A foam bumper is different: it sits on the mattress, under the fitted sheet, rather than hanging beside it.
How long do I wait for vacuum-packed foam?
Kohentact’s straight bumper says 24 hours in a ventilated area. ZEIXIHY and the Kohentact teardrop say 24–48 hours. YIHATA can be slower in a cold room, with about 25°C mentioned for a typical rebound. Do not sleep a child against foam that is still the shape of the parcel. If it has not risen by the end of that window, contact the seller.
What if it slides on top of the sheet?
Put it under the fitted sheet, which is what these foam listings describe. ZEIXIHY and YIHATA reviews say the bumper moves on top, and a child can push it off. Peekabi was sometimes too big to go underneath on a double. If the sheet will not cover it, you do not have a stable fit. A missing or snapped BANBALOO strap means the same thing: take it off until the strap holds.
What if the manual is useless?
Do not invent the build. CAPT says not to use a guard that has no instructions. Liloro reviewers called the manual poor, and one needed a screwdriver despite a no-drill claim. A video of a different rail can show a 25 cm gap. It cannot tell you which hole is yours. Contact the seller, and leave the rail off until the parts match a method you can follow.
Can I cover the mesh to make it softer?
No. Do not hang a blanket, towel or extra cloth over the mesh. MadeForMums’ note is to leave the mesh clear. A cover you add can block the panel and give a child something to climb. If the mesh feels hard, that is a reason to choose foam on a future bed, not to pad this rail tonight. Wipe a Safety 1st rail with a damp cloth. Machine-wash only a cover the listing says is removable.
