Shed window

Updated: 23 October 2026

You searched for a shed window and landed on a basement listing, because the title sells the same unit as a cellar escape and as a coop light. For an unheated garden building where nobody sleeps, the job is daylight, a bit of air, and a screen that still works when the sash moves. Products Compared editorial team looked at seven amazon.co.uk listings, from £39.10 to £100, checked on 22 October 2026. We did not install one in a shed, and the written comments that mention sheds are from the United States. The full table is the main [Basement window](/hub/diy-supplies/basement-window) comparison. When a shed window is allowed to be simple

North West Leicestershire's summary of Class 6 exempt work describes a detached building with no sleeping accommodation, up to 15 m², or up to 30 m² if it is single storey and either at least 1 m from the boundary or substantially non-combustible. The moment a shed becomes a bedroom, you are no longer buying a coop light. Water or electricity shared with a dwelling is not exempt with the shed. Part L's 1.4 W/(m²·K) figure for dwelling windows does not belong in a chicken coop. The Planning Portal says a shed can be permitted development when height, location, and coverage are met and the use stays incidental to the house. This page cannot promise that for your plot. Once you cut an existing panel, the fitting limits are on how to fit a basement window.

What these listings are being used for

Several titles name a shed, a coop, or a barn as well as a basement. The Kathfly 16 by 8 inch window at £39.10 has a United States comment about shed vents. Other comments call it flimsy, bent on arrival, and very small. The listing says the screen is removable, and the hole should be smaller than 14.9 by 7 inches. The frosted Croblissful unit at £86.64 has a United States chicken-coop comment, and a reviewer says the screen has to be opened before the sash moves. Sion's store and the £100 ZUGIATP name shed-type buildings and have no reviews. There is no UK shed review in this capture. Which row is the lower price is on best basement window.

Condensation is not a failed escape window

Dunster House, writing about their own garden buildings rather than these ASINs, notes that an unopened window can add condensation when it is colder outside, and that opening helps only when the outside air is drier. Wet morning glass is that temperature difference, not a failed escape test. A new window does not, by itself, dry the shed. You can still choose a unit that opens, because a fixed light cannot give you that airing. The Kathfly slider is described as closed, half open, or fully open. If the screen must be swung aside before the sash moves, the coop gets air and insects together. None of these listings claims to stop shed damp.

The line you do not cross

Buy the small opening unit if nobody sleeps there, the building stays incidental, and you are not sharing the house electrics or the house water in a way that drops the exemption. A 16 by 8 inch vent is enough light for many sheds. It is the wrong product the day the shed becomes a bedroom or a room you are trying to heat to a dwelling standard. Approved Document L's window limit and Approved Document B's escape opening are those other jobs. If that line is close, leave this page. The escape-size page is the test for a habitable room, including why a 16 by 8 inch frame fails before it is opened. Do not use a title that says egress as a way to keep sleeping inside Class 6. A screen and a £39.10 slider do not change the requirement of no sleeping accommodation.

Common questions

Can I use a 16 by 8 inch window in a shed?
Yes, if the shed is unheated and nobody sleeps in it. The Kathfly and both Croblissful rows are that nominal size. The Kathfly page wants an opening smaller than 14.9 by 7 inches. It is a small light, and it is not a bedroom window.
Does a shed window have to hit 1.4 W/(m²·K)?
Not as a chicken coop or a store with no sleeping. That 1.4 figure is the dwelling-window limit in Approved Document L where Table 4.2 applies. None of these listings prints a U-value, so you could not prove the figure anyway. Do not specify a house window for a coop, and do not use a coop window to satisfy a house.
What if I sleep in the shed?
Then it is no longer the simple case. Class 6, as North West Leicestershire summarises it, requires no sleeping accommodation. A place people sleep can need an escape opening and a different building-regulations path. Stop using this page for that building and read the escape-size page before you order a 16 by 8 inch unit as the way out.
Will a screen keep insects out of a coop?
Only if the screen stays in place while the sash is open. The Kathfly listing says the mesh is removable, which is useful if you can put it back. A reviewer of the frosted unit says the screen is not removable and must be opened to move the sash, so insects get a path when you ventilate. The Sion titles name a screen and have no reviews. No screen is named on the £100 pivot window.
Do I need planning permission just to add a window to a shed?
Not automatically. The Planning Portal says outbuildings can be permitted development when height, location, and coverage are within the limits and the use is incidental, not a separate home. Listed buildings and designated land are tighter. Cutting one window does not answer those tests. Check the plot before you treat a product page as permission.
