Silicone-free anti-spatter spray

Updated: 23 October 2026

You have welded a gate, a bracket or a trailer repair, and the next job is paint, powder, zinc or a plated finish. Silicone shrugs spatter off a nozzle and can spoil that finish. Fish-eyes, craters and a coat that will not wet the steel are the usual result. This page is the silicone-free anti-spatter spray constraint for that job, not a second catalogue. The twelve listings and the prices are on the [anti-spatter spray comparison](/hub/diy-supplies/anti-spatter-spray), from the amazon.co.uk capture of 19 October 2026. There is no lab test. Why silicone is the wrong film on a painted job

Silicone oil spreads. A smear on a glove, a clamp or the steel beside the seam can sit under paint and stop it lying flat. You cannot see a thin silicone layer the way you see mill scale. You see it when the paint fails. The words that count are on the listing or the sheet, not in a name that says premium, solvent-free or water-based. Solvent-free describes the carrier. Water-based describes the carrier. Neither sentence says the film is free of silicone. SUPER6 1357, 300 ml at about £7.99, says solvent-free and does not say silicone-free. If a painter, a galvaniser or a powder coater will see the part, silicone-free has to be stated. The phrase is a buying rule, not permission to paint over a puddle.

Cans that say silicone-free

WEICON part 11700400, two 400 ml cans at about £27.98, says silicone-free and allows painting or galvanising without special cleaning unless you over-sprayed. It is 4.7 from 1,456 ratings, with two United Kingdom texts in the first 50. Who should skip it is on the best anti-spatter spray page. Chemodex, 2 x 300 ml at about £14.92, says silicone-free and still wants a white-spirit wipe. SIP at about £10.99 says no silicones or oils and has no review line. TYGRIS R221 at about £14.45 says non-silicone. A safety data sheet dated 1 August 2024 lists dichloromethane at 70-90% and conflicts with the non-flammable title, so read the can you receive.

What still needs a wipe

Silicone-free means you have avoided one contaminant. It does not mean the steel is ready for paint. Chemodex says safe for painting and, in the same how-to, clean with white spirit. WEICON draws the line at over-spray. Tygris tells you to degrease a remaining film. A plate that looks wet is the over-spray case, whatever the front label promised. Spray a dull film, weld with extraction running, brush loose spheres, and wipe as that can instructs. Do not paint the same afternoon over a shine you can smear with a thumb. HSE's fume alert is unchanged by the silicone line. How you apply the film, including the wait for propellant, is the how to use anti-spatter spray page. A soaked joint is how a silicone-free product still fails a painter.

Gels and cans that do not say

Naroote at about £9.91 and the generic D-type gel at about £8.31 are mainly silicone oil, sold as dips under spray titles. Keep them off any face you will paint, plate or galvanise. A glove that dipped the nozzle and then held the bracket is enough to move that oil. If the nozzle must be dipped and the work coated, dip the tip only, change gloves, and use a silicone-free aerosol on the steel. SUPER6 1490, 500 g at about £9.38, has 127 ratings and no silicone line. It is a nozzle product, not a painted-gate recommendation. Langley, SWP and Kraken Bond also leave silicone unstated. Leave a blank listing off coated work until the can says silicone-free.

Common questions

What is silicone-free anti-spatter spray?
It is a weld spatter release whose listing or maker sheet says the film contains no silicone, so a later paint, plate, galvanise or anodise is less likely to fish-eye. In this set the words appear on WEICON, Chemodex, SIP and the TYGRIS title. You still keep the coat thin and you still follow that can's wipe. The claim is not a promise of zero cleaning, and it is not fume control.
Which cans in this set say silicone-free?
WEICON 11700400 at about £27.98, Chemodex 2 x 300 ml at about £14.92, SIP 400 ml at about £10.99 (no silicones or oils), and TYGRIS R221 at about £14.45 (non-silicone on the title). WEICON has the maker sheet and the largest rating count. SIP and TYGRIS have no review line in this capture. TYGRIS also has a safety-data-sheet conflict with its non-flammable title, so you read the can before you treat every line as settled.
Can you paint straight over it?
Only in the way that can allows. WEICON says painting or galvanising needs no special cleaning unless you over-sprayed. Chemodex says clean with a white-spirit-based solvent even though it says the formula is safe for painting. If the plate is still wet or shiny, wipe it. A silicone-free puddle can still upset a coat. Paint over a just-visible film that you have finished as the sheet describes.
Are the dip gels silicone-free?
The two cheap gels are not. Naroote and the generic D-type both say silicone oil, and both tell you to dip a preheated tip. Keep them off work you will coat. SUPER6 1490 paste does not say either way. Use it for a clogged nozzle if you accept that gap. Do not wipe it across a gate you will paint and call it silicone-free.
Does solvent-free mean silicone-free?
No. SUPER6 1357 says solvent-free on the title and does not mention silicone. Water-based, on SIP and on the Langley 25 litre title, is also a different word. Langley's drum does not state silicone at all. Buy the silicone-free sentence when a painter follows the welder. Do not infer it from price, from a 5.0 star line, or from the word premium.
Will silicone-free anti-spatter still need a degrease?
Often yes. Chemodex specifies white spirit. Tygris specifies a degrease if film remains. WEICON limits special cleaning to the over-spray case. Silicone-free removes one risk. Oil, excess film and ordinary weld soot can still sit on the steel. Wipe to the can's instruction, then paint.
