Acrylic sheet buying guide

Updated: 23 October 2026

You have a rebate, a cracked frame, or a shed opening, and the amazon.co.uk results all look like the same clear rectangle. An acrylic sheet buying guide helps because the wrong gauge, the wrong plastic, or a pane a few millimetres short will not sit in that opening. The twelve listings in our [acrylic glass pane comparison](/hub/diy-supplies/acrylic-glass-pane), read on 19 October 2026, run from 1 mm craft packs around £6.99 to single 3 mm panes near 600 mm at about £13.99 to £15.95. This page is the order of decisions. Peter F. checked those amazon.co.uk listings and public UK trade notes. We did not run a lab test.

Start with the opening, not the brand

Measure the hole before you compare brands. For a picture frame, that is the rebate the glass used to occupy, width and height in millimetres, plus the depth the lip will accept. For a shed or greenhouse, it is the distance between the bars where the pane clips, rather than a 2 foot label on the old glass. A 600 mm sheet and a 610 mm sheet are both sold as greenhouse sizes in this set, and a 10 mm difference is enough to miss the rubber. Reviews on the 600 mm Sheetcuts pane include shortfalls of about 5–10 mm. Perspex's rule of thumb for outdoor movement is 5 mm per metre.

Thickness, where UK trade guides do not match

Plastics Direct places picture-frame work at 2–3 mm. Plastic Sheets Direct puts 2 mm on frames and light covers and treats 3 mm as the all-rounder, including greenhouse and shed panes on a supported span. Plastics Direct's thickness guide moves greenhouse panes towards 4 mm. Plastic Sheets Direct keeps 3 mm for panes up to about 600 mm and steps up when the pane is larger or exposed. None of that is a British Standard for your shed. Buyers of the 610 mm Sheetcuts square report sag on a roof. If you need 4 mm or 5 mm across a roof module, this set does not contain that pane.

Acrylic, cast, extruded, and PET

Acrylic is PMMA. Perspex is a brand of that plastic, and plexiglass on a listing is the same family when the material line agrees. Polycarbonate is tougher and scratches more readily. PET is a third sheet. Cast versus extruded is the split inside acrylic. Simply Plastics points extruded sheet at greenhouse, shed, and picture-frame glazing, and cast sheet at laser work. Perspex quotes a tighter thickness tolerance for extruded sheet, ISO 7823-2, plus or minus 5 percent from 3 mm. Not one of these twelve listings states cast or extruded. Do not infer the process from the price. The failure mode on amazon.co.uk is a title that says acrylic while the sheet is PET. Art3d's five-pack is titled as acrylic. A bullet calls it PET, and a verified UK review on 5 August 2026 says the same. Skip that pack if you need PMMA.

What to ignore on the listing

Unbreakable, a single impact multiple, and a fire sentence are not a test of the sheet in your basket. Perspex's design guide puts cast sheet at BS 476 Part 7 Class 3 from 3 mm upwards, and Class 4 below that. Extruded Perspex is Class 4 at the thicknesses in that table. Those classes describe surface spread of flame. London Fire's note on fire-resisting glazing is about a tested system, not an ordinary clear sheet. Do not put any pane in this comparison into a fire door or an escape-route screen because a bullet said resistant. Film on both faces is normal, and it makes a clear sheet look milky until you peel both sides. That handling point is on the how to cut acrylic sheet page. Perspex warns against glass cleaner, solvents, and plasticised PVC gaskets, which it links to crazing. If you want a named pick for a frame or a 610 mm side, the best acrylic sheet UK page splits this set by job. A pack, a single pane, or a cutter

Buy a pack when a frame or small cover already matches the stated size, such as two A4 sheets at 3 mm. Buy a single pane for a greenhouse size, and still check the millimetres. Leave this set for a stated cast grade, a 4 mm roof, or a tolerance a hand cut will not hold.

Common questions

What thickness do I need for a picture frame?
UK trade guides put picture-frame glazing at about 2–3 mm. Plastics Direct uses that band, and Plastic Sheets Direct puts 2 mm on frames and light covers. A 1 mm craft square from this set is thinner. An A4 sheet stated at 3 mm sits in the band if the lip accepts 3 mm. Measure that lip, because a thick sheet will not close the frame.
Is 3 mm enough for a greenhouse wall, or do I need 4 mm?
Plastic Sheets Direct allows 3 mm up to about 600 mm on a supported span. Plastics Direct leans towards 4 mm for greenhouse panes. The Plastic People start at 3 mm because 2 mm flexed for their customers. This set's greenhouse panes are stated at 3 mm, and roof-sag reviews exist on the 610 mm square. For a roof, 3 mm is the listing, and flex is already in the reviews.
Cast or extruded for ordinary glazing?
Simply Plastics points extruded acrylic at greenhouse, shed, and picture-frame glazing, and cast acrylic at laser work. Ordinary glazing does not require cast. None of the twelve listings states the process, so a laser job that needs a named cast grade should go to a seller who prints it.
How do I know a listing is acrylic and not PET?
Read the material bullet, not only the title. Acrylic, PMMA, Perspex, and plexiglass belong together when the rest of the page agrees. The Art3d five-pack is titled acrylic, a bullet says PET, and a verified UK review on 5 August 2026 confirms PET. If those lines conflict, do not treat the pack as acrylic.
Do 600 mm and 610 mm panes interchange?
A 10 mm gap is enough to miss the rubber or the clip. Reviews on the 600 mm Sheetcuts sheet describe shortfalls of about 5–10 mm. Order the size you measured. A two-foot note on an old pane is not a substitute for those millimetres.
