Replacement spade handle

Updated: 21 October 2026

A replacement spade handle is usually one of two objects. You are standing in the shed with a fork or a spade whose head is still sound, and you would rather not buy another blade. What should be clear by the end of this page is the order of the decision: what broke, then the socket, then the hilt, then the length. Peter F. compared the eleven amazon.co.uk listings on the [spade handle comparison](/hub/digging-tools/spade-handle) in October 2026. There was no lab test. Shaft or grip

Start with the broken part, not the brand. A snapped, rotten, or split shaft needs a full handle. A split plastic loop on a shaft that is still straight and solid needs a grip. Rivets are a fastener you buy beside the handle. They are not the handle. In this set the full shafts are ash or an unnamed wood, mostly around 710 mm, with a plastic D, a timber T, or a metal Y. QWORK and Amtech both state a 32 mm bore. A generic polypropylene D states about 30 mm and has no star line. A grip cannot bridge a shaft that is already in two pieces. Measure the sound wood before you compare those bores. Wet wood is larger, and the pin is not in the pack. The stump and the finish belong on how to replace a spade handle.

Length and the numbers on the listing

28 inch and 710 mm are the same headline length on the Faithfull ash shafts in this set. Toolzone’s wooden shaft with a plastic D is stated at 80 cm, about 31.5 inches, and it narrows from 35 mm to a 25 mm insertion end. A West Country shovel handle around 1,300 mm, which trade lists such as Pipestock still sell, is a different pattern. Measure socket depth as well as the headline length. One Carters review measured about 27 inches against a stated 28. Faithfull states a 25 mm fixing end on a 38 mm ash shaft. A 32 mm bore is the inside of a grip that slides onto a shaft you already own.

Hilt and taper, without deciding them here

The hilt is how your hand meets the tool, and it does not change the socket. A D, also called a Y or YD, closes around one hand. A timber T lets both hands sit either side. A metal Y is the heavier-duty hilt in this Faithfull range, not a longer shaft. Which you want is D grip or T handle. Copy the old head. A straight socket wants a straight taper. A cranked socket wants a bent taper. Trade copy that sells the bend as leverage is useless if your mouth is straight. How to tell them apart is on straight or bent taper. Grip-only parts have no taper at all.

What BS 3823 and FSC do not buy you

Ash is the usual timber on these full shafts. BS 3823:1990 grades ash and hickory handles. A BW or BR claim is a note on density, moisture, grain, and finish. The standard does not prove a listing will enter your socket. FSC on the Faithfull ash is a sourcing mark, not a strength test. Unfinished ash still needs oil or varnish outdoors. Shelf prices here sit in three bands: about £5–£8 for the grips and the Toolzone shaft at about £7.99, about £13–£16 for most Faithfull ash and the Carters shaft, and about £18.70 for the metal-Y straight shaft. Most listings do not include a rivet. Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 the goods must be of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose, and as described. A shaft that snaps on an ordinary first dig is a different complaint from a bent taper you ordered for a straight socket.

Common questions

Do I need a whole shaft or only a D-grip?
You need a whole shaft when the wood is snapped, rotten, or split. You need a D-grip when that wood is still straight and solid and only the loop has failed. A 32 mm polypropylene grip cannot stand in for a 710 mm ash shaft. If you are unsure, look at the break before you look at the star rating.
What does a 25 mm end mean compared with a 32 mm bore?
A 25 mm end is the tip of a full shaft that enters the steel socket. A 32 mm bore is the inside of a grip that slides onto a shaft you already have. They are not two ways of writing the same size. Measure the part that is still on the tool.
Does FSC or BS 3823 mean it will fit my fork?
No. FSC marks the source of the timber. BS 3823:1990 is a grading standard for ash and hickory handles, covering things such as density, moisture, grain, and finish as trade sellers describe it. Neither one measures your socket. A graded shaft can still need a rasp, and it can still be the wrong taper.
Should I buy rivets at the same time?
Yes, if you want to finish today. Reviews across the Faithfull shafts and the plastic grips say the rivet or screw is not in the box. A screw can loosen in a socket that a peened rivet would hold. Buy the pin to suit the hole in the head, not a random wood screw from the drawer.
What if I order the wrong taper?
You own a spare that will not follow the socket. Forcing a bent end into a straight mouth risks a split or a loose fit that snaps. Check the side view before you pay. A wrong-size order is not the same as a shaft that fails on a normal dig.
