How to use a universal cutter

Updated: October 2026

The jaws have sprung open in the tool bag, or the 4 V head started when you picked it up with one finger. This page is how to use a universal cutter: match the cut to the listing, set a tension screw so the blades still open, lock or unplug before you put the tool away, and stop when the job is live cable or a swelling pack. The [universal cutter comparison](/hub/cutting-tools/universal-cutter) holds the four amazon.co.uk listings from 19 October 2026. Products Compared editorial team read those pages and public care notes. We did not film a workshop test. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Before the first cut

Read the material on the listing before you put it in the jaws. S&R states leather to 5 mm, electrical cable to 2.5 mm and aluminium sheet of 1 mm. Draper's amazon.co.uk bullets give no millimetre figure. Focenat claims up to 1/4 inch on soft goods. Candeon claims about 6 mm on cardboard, carpet and leather. If the stock is thicker than that line, or it is a padlock or fence wire, this is the wrong tool. Live, buried or in-wall cable is out of scope; the stop sits on universal cutter for cable and leather. Inspect the handle and the pivot. A cracked handle or a pivot that opens under load is a failed tool. Draper reviews include a pair that came apart on thin wire and a plastic handle that bent. S&R reviews did not show a repeated handle break in the notes we read. Check that a lock, clip or double switch still works before the first bite. HSE notes that hand knives slip on trimming and that scissors can replace a knife for some of that work. That is a reason to use the shear on cardboard. It is not a reason to force a cut the listing never claimed. A rotary head is a different pre-check. Confirm the blade is seated, the case is closed, and both controls on the Focenat unit are where you expect them. A review says two controls must be pressed together. Candeon does not list a double switch. If the pack is swollen, scorched or smells, do not switch it on.

Cut, then set the tension

On a hand shear, sit the material deep in the jaws, near the pivot, not on the tips. Close about two-thirds of the way, then open and move forward. BuildWiz describes that bite on aviation snips; the same habit stops a stepped edge on sheet here, though this set is not an aviation tool. Do not hammer the handles. Do not finish every bite at the tips on metal, because that is how a thin core notches the edge. One S&R review reported a stepped edge after cutting decoration with a 0.1 mm mild-steel core. S&R has a tension screw. BESSEY's care note on compound snips is the rule we use, labelled as general snip care, not as an S&R manual: take the play out of the joint until the shears still open and close easily. If the handles become hard to open, you have gone too far. Oil the joint lightly if it squeaks. Draper is spring-opening and has no tension screw on the listing. If the spring no longer returns the handles, the pair is worn. A 4 V rotary cutter is a guided head, not a snip. Keep the guard on the board, start on a single thickness, and do not stack cartons into the blade. Candeon reviews say double thickness may jam. Focenat reviews report stalling and heat on thicker cardboard. If the head hangs, stop and clear it. Do not lean on the motor. Who should own which tool is on best universal cutter.

Lock, store, and charge

S&R lists a one-hand lock and a hang hole. Close the jaws and set that lock before the pair goes in a bag. Draper's amazon.co.uk listing does not state a lock. The live Amazon product text names a handle clip. Treat those as two sources: you may have a clip on the pair in your hand, and this comparison does not invent a lock step from a field that was blank on the captured listing. If there is a clip, use it. If there is not, store the snips in a sleeve so the spring cannot open on a hand. BESSEY's note is to store shears with the edges closed and to oil the joint. Do not leave wet blades in a canvas bag; rust is a storage fault, not a brand ranking. Focenat's box lists a USB-C cable, not a mains charger. Candeon says charge from 5 V USB only. Electrical Safety First's USB-charger advice applies: use a reputable charger, and stop if the pack scorches, smells or swells. A 4 V tool sits below the voltage band of the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016; a cheap mains USB brick does not. Candeon reviews mention spare blades in the box and a safety screw that would not come off because the screwdriver size was not given. Do not force that screw with the wrong bit. Focenat includes a screwdriver and replacement blades. Change a blade with the pack off and the switch locked. The buying checks that sit behind these parts are on the universal cutter buying guide.

When to stop

Stop if the cable is plugged in, buried or in the wall. Call an electrician for mains wiring. Stop if the sheet is on a flue, a vehicle or a guard; that is a professional metal job, not a 50 mm scissor cut. Stop if a battery tool will not switch off, or if the pack swells. Stop if the handle is cracked or the pivot has opened, even if the pair still bites. Draper reviews already show that failure on wire. Stop if the work is repetitive and already hurting the hand. PUWER 1998 applies when an employer provides the tool: it must be suitable, maintained, and used by instructed people. HSE's hand-knife note is the same warning at home: a blunt or sprung tool is how people slip. A 74-year-old UK reviewer found the Focenat unit difficult with arthritis. That is a reason to keep a light hand snip for odd cuts, not a reason to force a 560 g motor. Throw the tool away when the blades will not meet, the lock will not hold, or the rotary head starts on its own.

Common questions

How do I cut with universal snips without leaving a stepped edge?
Sit the sheet deep in the jaws, close about two-thirds, then move forward. Do not finish every bite at the tips. That habit comes from aviation-snip advice and travels to these short shears. If the stock is thicker than the listing, you will notch the edge anyway. One S&R review saw that on a 0.1 mm mild-steel core.
How tight should the tension screw be?
Tight enough that the joint has no play, loose enough that the handles still open easily. That is BESSEY's care rule for snips, not an S&R workshop test. If you need two hands to open the pair, back the screw off. Draper 12389 has no tension screw on the listing.
How do I lock the Draper 12389 for a tool bag?
The amazon.co.uk listing does not name a lock. The live product text names a handle clip. If your pair has that clip, close the jaws and use it. If it does not, store the snips in a sleeve. Do not leave a sprung pair loose in a bag.
How do I lock the S&R scissors?
The listing describes a one-hand locking mechanism and a hang hole. Close the blades and set that lock before the pair goes away. The tension screw is a separate adjustment. It is not the lock.
How do I switch on a 4 V rotary cutter safely?
On Focenat, a review says two controls must be pressed together. That matches the double safety switch on the listing. Keep the head on the board before you start. Candeon does not list a double switch. Charge only from the USB supply the listing names. Stop if the pack is hot, swollen or smells.
Can I oil the pivot?
Yes, a light oil on a hand-shear joint is ordinary snip care. Wipe the blades dry first. Do not soak a plastic handle. Do not oil a rotary gearbox as if it were a pivot; follow the maker's note if one exists. A squeak is a care job. A pivot that opens under load is a failed tool.
When should I call a professional?
Call an electrician for mains wiring. Call a metalworker for flue, vehicle or guard sheet. Stop and take a battery tool to a shop if it will not switch off or the pack swells. If repetitive cutting at work is already hurting your hand, that is a PUWER problem for the employer, not a reason to buy a heavier motor.
