Polystyrene cutter pen or table

Updated: October 2026

One job is a letter, a hole, or a curve you steer by hand. The other is a square block, an angle you will repeat, or a slab against a fence. A pen follows the line. A table keeps the wire still and you slide the foam. The [polystyrene cutter comparison](/hub/cutting-tools/polystyrene-cutter) has the prices on 19 October 2026. This page only decides the shape. Plug and duty sit on the [polystyrene cutter buying guide](/hub/cutting-tools/polystyrene-cutter/sub/polystyrene-cutter-buying-guide). Peter F., the DIY & tools editor, compared the kept listings. There is one table in the set, and no lab. A qualifying purchase can earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

A pen follows the line

A hot-wire pen is a needle you draw with. QWORK and Eidoct are 15 W pens with a 10 cm wire, at about £10.99 and about £8.99. Afantti gives a 5 cm needle and a 10 cm needle at about £13.95. That reach covers a letter, a slot in packaging foam, a tool-box insert, or a thin offcut you can turn. It does not cross a sheet in one straight pass. An Afantti reviewer returned the tool as too short for roofing insulation. QWORK could not cut a foam mattress in a UK review. Eidoct is not for thick or high-density foam. Afantti excludes plastic sheet, PU, sponge, and high-density board, and a review could not cut 2 inch sponge, only burn it. QWORK includes a metal stand. Eidoct’s included-components line says NO. You can follow a pencilled curve, and you will wander if the wire cools and you push. If the edge must be square to a millimetre, stop steering the wire.

A table keeps the wire still

On a table the wire is a fixed string. You set the angle, hold the foam with both hands, and slide it against a backstop. The only table kept here is the WINONS WFC0015S at about £79.95, with 4.4 from 180 reviews. Cutting height is 180 mm and depth is 355 mm, on a 260 × 380 mm table. Six levels run from about 100°C to about 400°C. A foot switch heats the wire while your foot asks for it. Three metres of 0.25 mm wire are supplied. Reviewers use the backstop for straight cuts and mention wargames scenery. Threading the wire is fiddly, the guides have a little play until locked, and the instructions are weak there. One reviewer paid £84.95 and wanted a better finish. Fumes still come up when the foam is cut hot. A fence does not extract styrene. Stop at the stated 60 minutes. A block taller than 180 mm or deeper than 355 mm does not fit in one pass. A Hilltop trade table at 550 mm is a different class. A Spanish listing of the same model number added 24 W. This page does not use that figure.

What about £79.95 does not include

About £79.95 buys the throat, the foot switch, the fence hardware, and a coil of wire. It does not buy a stated UK plug. A low-voltage wire is claimed, and a power supply is in the box. That is not a BS 1363 plug. If you need the plug stated in writing, Switch Electronics says it, and it is not a table. The best value and the top pick are on best polystyrene cutter. Do not borrow the review count from the WINONS WFC0008 handheld kit. You also do not get freedom from fumes or a wire that never needs threading. Reviews mention the smell and play in the guides. They do not describe a wave of tools that arrived dead. A complaint about a WINONS arm that will not sit square does not name WFC0015S. Choose the pen for letters inside about 10 cm. Choose the table when the cut is repeatable and the block fits 180 mm by 355 mm.

Kits are not a third species

A multi-head kit is still a pen. Switch Electronics, ROOKNEX, DYOUen, and KQWVZ put extra tips in the box. You still draw the cut. DOINOW’s bow blade is a cordless handheld tool, not a bench with a fence. HuuppHip’s four heads are the same story. None of them gives you 180 mm of guarded height or a foot switch that leaves both hands free. Use a kit for an engraving tip or a second wire shape on letters and thin sheet. Use the table when steering the wire is the mistake you are trying not to make. If you can turn the piece and the cut is shorter than 10 cm, a pen is enough. If the line has to match the next block, buy the table, and only if 180 mm and 355 mm cover the work. That audience is on polystyrene cutter for model making.

Common questions

When is a pen the wrong shape?
When the board is wider than the wire, or the cut has to stay square without your hand steering it. The Afantti return for roofing insulation is the clear case: 10 cm did not span the job. A mattress that a QWORK pen could not cut is a density problem as well as a shape problem. Letters and small inserts are still pen work.
Can I do letters on a table?
You can rough a straight-sided character against the fence. A script letter, a hole in the counter of a letter, or a tight curve is still easier with a pen you can steer. The table’s advantage is the repeatable straight cut, not freehand detail.
Does a table remove the fume problem?
No. WINONS reviews mention fumes when the foam is cut hot, and the listing tells you to ventilate and wear goggles. The wire is still melting polystyrene. Open the room, keep the level only just high enough, and do not treat the foot switch as extraction.
Is a multi-tip kit a table?
No. Extra heads on Switch Electronics, ROOKNEX, DYOUen, KQWVZ, DOINOW, or HuuppHip stay in your hand. A table in this set means the WINONS, with a fixed wire, a backstop, and a foot switch. A bow tip on the DOINOW is still cordless and handheld.
Are workshop tables the same thing as this table?
No. Trade tables in UK shops quote cutting heights around 550 mm or about a metre, at several hundred pounds. The WINONS is a hobby table with 180 mm of height and 355 mm of depth. Use it when your blocks fit those numbers. Use a trade machine when they do not.
