Aqueous or solvent parts washer

Updated: 21.10.2026

The can on the shelf is paraffin, and the listing in the basket says solvent capacity. That pairing is how tanks get melted and how waste ends up in a drain. An aqueous or solvent parts washer is a fluid decision first and a brand decision second. For the three machines on the [parts washer comparison](/hub/compressors/parts-washer), the workable path is a water-based, non-flammable degreaser, with one listing that says so outright and one brand page you have to read because Amazon does not. The amazon.co.uk listings, the UK review notes, Hilka's and Draper's own pages, and HSE's public guidance were compared on 19 October 2026. Which fluid cleans faster was not measured. What these machines are sold to take

The Draper 22494 is the plain case. The bullets say it is not suitable for solvent-based cleaning fluids. UK reviews describe water-based degreaser. The title states 230 V. A UK review says the tank is not heated. If you were about to pour paraffin into that blue tank, the listing has already said no. The star line, 3.4 from 27, does not change the fluid ban. The Hilka 84995505 is the clash. At £66.95, with 4.5 from 118 reviews, the bullets say a 3.5 gallon solvent capacity and do not name a fluid. Hilka's own page says an aqueous non-flammable degreaser and that thinners are unsuitable. UK reviews mention paraffin and Jizer. Non-UK reviews say thinners melted the body or the pump. Solvent capacity here is a volume line, not permission. The FOHERE JX-020S is a 120 W ultrasonic bath at £67.98. The listing does not name a solvent. One UK review says the user guide warns against flammable liquids. Reviewers used water, washing-up liquid, CLR and ultrasonic fluid. CLR plus a 30 minute cycle turned nickel plate dark grey in one report. How you wash, once the fluid is chosen, is on how to use a parts washer.

When a solvent station is a different product

A real solvent washer is a different purchase. HSE sheet SR23 says to ventilate, use a proper station, keep solvent off the skin, and never pour waste solvent down the drain. DSEAR 2002 applies where a substance can create a fire or explosion risk at work. The word solvent on an Amazon bullet does not meet that. Clarke's UK manuals for its own washers forbid paraffin and thinners by name. Hilka's site claims a fusible-link cover. The amazon bullets only say a safety cut-out. A garage introducing a flammable degreaser needs a competent person before the drum arrives.

Aqueous does not mean pour it away

Water-based fluid can still harm skin and lungs, so keep gloves on and the lid shut. HSE's water-mix page says so. A supplier may say heated aqueous fluid cleans as well as solvent. That was not measured here. Once the fluid has washed a gearbox it is carrying oil. GOV.UK says a business must classify solvents, oils and oily water. The sink is still wrong at home. Biodegradable on the fresh bottle does not describe waste after a sump has been in it. Use the council route, or a licensed collector at work. Size and plug stay on the parts washer buying guide. Jizer in a UK Hilka review is what an owner poured, not a Hilka approval.

Which way to go

For this set, use an aqueous non-flammable degreaser. On the Draper that is what the listing already requires. On the Hilka it is what the brand page requires, even though the amazon bullet says solvent capacity. On the FOHERE, stay with the non-flammable fluids reviewers describe. Choose a solvent station only when the equipment is built for it and, at work, when someone competent has looked at COSHH and DSEAR. These three machines are sold, on the pages that specify a fluid, as aqueous or as not for solvent. A water-based fluid was not shown here to shift the same baked carbon a strong solvent might. The conditional names, once you have accepted the fluid, are on best parts washer.

Common questions

Should I buy an aqueous or a solvent parts washer?
For these three, buy on aqueous, non-flammable fluid. The Draper listing bans solvent-based fluids. Hilka's page says aqueous degreaser and no thinners. A FOHERE review says the guide bans flammable liquids. A solvent washer is a different machine, with ventilation and, at work, a COSHH and DSEAR assessment.
Can I put paraffin in the Hilka or the Draper?
Do not. The Draper bullets ban solvent-based cleaning fluids. Hilka's page says thinners are unsuitable and the fluid should be aqueous and non-flammable. UK reviews that mention paraffin record what some owners poured.
What does "solvent capacity" mean on the Hilka?
On the amazon bullets it is a 3.5 gallon figure, and the gallon type is not stated. The bullets do not name an approved fluid. Treat the line as a tank-size claim, and follow Hilka's page.
Is water-based fluid safe to tip away?
Not after it has washed oily parts. Fresh aqueous fluid can still irritate skin. HSE says waste solvent never goes down the drain. A household should use the council hazardous-waste route. Biodegradable on the new bottle does not cover a dirty tank.
Do I need a fusible-link lid if I use aqueous fluid?
A fusible link is a fire device. Hilka's site describes that cover. The amazon listing only says a safety cut-out, so do not assume the link is present unless you can see it. Clarke's manuals say a dropped link is replaced, not reset. That manual is Clarke's.
