Cordless compressor buying guide

Updated: 21.10.2026

You searched for a cordless compressor and Amazon offered both a glovebox pump and a 6 litre tank. They are not substitutes. On 19 October 2026 the twelve listings in our [cordless compressor comparison](/hub/compressors/cordless-compressor) were ten handheld inflators from £16.99 to £67.99 and two bare Einhell tanks at £141.95 and £217.33. This cordless compressor buying guide is the trade-off between those types. It is not a lab test. A qualifying purchase can earn us a commission at no extra cost to you. The aim is to match the job, then ignore a PSI ceiling you will never use.

Handheld pump or tank

Buy a handheld when the job is a car tyre, a motorcycle, a bicycle or a football. You store a pressure, the motor stops, and the tool goes back in the boot. Listings such as the HOVVIDA also say they are not for a paddleboard or a large lorry tyre. None of the ten inflators has a receiver. Buy a tank when you want a regulated outlet for a short blow-gun or nailer run and you already own the batteries. The Einhell TE-AC 36/150 needs two 18 V Power X-Change packs and costs £141.95 without a battery or charger. The SILENZZO 18/160 needs one 18 V pack and costs £217.33 on the same basis. Neither belongs beside a warning lamp. Airflow for those bodies is on the cordless workshop compressor page. A glovebox pump will not become a trade compressor because the title says compressor.

Air at the pressure you will use

A car placard is often near 2.1 to 2.5 bar. Highway Code Annex 6 tells you to use the manufacturer's cold figure. Every handheld here can reach that. The NOCO stops at 130 PSI and the others claim 150 or 160 PSI. You will not use the extra headroom on a family car. Stated handheld figures run from 17 L/min on the NOCO AL5 and the GEARLASSO, to 20 L/min on the Lamicall VHEP03, 25 L/min on the HOVVIDA and the ASNUG, and 28 L/min on the Lamicall VHEP02. The SERVOMASTER, both Tardens and the Motorenbau do not state litres per minute. ABAC's UK chart, a manufacturer rule of thumb and not a test of these ASINs, puts tyre inflation around 30 to 60 L/min at 6 to 8 bar. These pumps sit at or under the bottom of that band, so a few PSI is quick and a very low tyre is not.

Battery in the box, or not

Stated handheld packs run from 3600 mAh on the ASNUG to 4000 on the VHEP03, 5200 on the HOVVIDA and 6000 on the VHEP02. Four cheaper listings do not state milliamp hours. A blank is not a small battery and not a large one. A pack left in the boot still needs a charge before a trip. The ASNUG adds a 3 m 12 V lead. One UK reviewer says that lead runs the pump and does not charge the pack. The GEARLASSO bullets offer 21 V or 12 V, while the included-components field lists only the charger. The HOVVIDA will not start while its charger is plugged in. The tank price is the body only, so add a Power X-Change battery and a charger before you compare £141.95 with a £43 inflator.

What you can skip

Ignore both Einhell dimension fields of 10 x 10 x 10 mm, the NOCO weight of 27 g beside a 15.6 x 9.9 x 26.2 cm body, and the SERVOMASTER line that says jump starter while the title is a tyre inflator. Ignore the Motorenbau 5.0 from 18 reviews until you see that most texts are about a needle pack. The best cordless compressor page separates those star lines. The main table is where the twelve prices sit together.

Common questions

Is a cordless compressor the same as a cordless tyre inflator?
In this set, ten of the twelve listings are handheld inflators that stop at a set pressure. Two are Einhell tanks with no battery in the box. If you only need car, bike or ball pressures, buy the inflator. If you need a regulated outlet for tools, a PSI ceiling on a glovebox pump will not provide it.
What airflow do I need for car tyres versus a nailer?
Stated handheld airflow here is 17 to 28 L/min, which suits a top-up and is slow from a very low tyre. ABAC's manufacturer chart, not a test of these pumps, puts tyres around 30 to 60 L/min at 6 to 8 bar. A nailer needs the tank's output at working pressure. The 150 or 160 L/min Einhell figures are intake. A 17 L/min pump is the wrong tool for a nailer.
Why does the tank price not include a battery?
Both Einhell listings are bare bodies. The TE-AC needs two 18 V batteries and the SILENZZO needs one. Small packs cut out well below 8 bar, so the battery decides whether you reach pressure at all. Add that cost before you compare a tank with a handheld that already has a pack.
Does a 6 litre, 8 bar tank need an inspection at home?
Six times 8 is 48 bar litres. INDG178 says a portable receiver under 250 bar litres is not likely to need a written scheme. That is the home reading of this size. It does not cancel workplace rules above 0.5 bar, and a sticking safety valve still needs a competent person.
Should I trust 150 PSI or 150 L/min?
Neither number describes the job. 150 PSI is a handheld ceiling, and a car placard is much lower. 150 L/min on the TE-AC is intake, not output at 7 bar. Use a stated litres-per-minute figure when the handheld has one. A missing airflow line is a gap, not a hidden advantage.
When is a 12 V lead worth paying for?
When the internal pack may be flat and the car has a 12 V socket you can reach. The ASNUG and the GEARLASSO are the two handhelds here with that fallback. One ASNUG review says the lead does not recharge the pack. If the car has no such socket, a USB-C inflator with a stated battery is the more direct buy.
Which Amazon fields should I ignore?
Ignore 10 x 10 x 10 mm sizes on either Einhell, a 27 g weight on the NOCO, and a jump-starter parts line on the SERVOMASTER. Ignore the Motorenbau 5.0 until the reviews are about the pump. Hose length, stated airflow, whether a battery is included, and the amazon.co.uk review count are the fields that still change the decision.
