6 litre air compressor buying guide

Updated: 21.10.2026

You are on amazon.co.uk with a portable 230 V compressor, and the title says 6 litres while the next line quotes a litres-per-minute figure and a single decibel number. Those are four different facts if you also count the plug. This page separates them before the price means anything. It does not rank the five kept listings. Shelf prices, stars, and the tank flags sit on the [6 litre air compressor comparison](/hub/compressors/air-compressor-6l). We read those listings and the UK-headed reviews on 19 October 2026. We did not run a lab test.

What a 6 litre listing is claiming

A 6 litre receiver stores a short reserve of air. It does not tell you how much air the pump can make, and it does not get larger because a style menu says so. The Stanley DN200/8/6 is the clearest example. The style line says a 200 litre tank. The tank-volume field says 6 litres, and the model name is DN200/8/6. Use 6 litres. The Draper 02115 and the ABAC Ease-AIR 6 also state 6 litres. The Hyundai HY5508X and the Bimson Power model state 8 litres. They are not an answer to a search that asked for 6 litres. On these direct-drive machines the motor stops when the pressure switch is satisfied and starts again as soon as you use the air. UK reviews on the Stanley and the Draper describe that cut-in within seconds as the small tank, not as a surprise defect. A brad nailer with pauses can live with that rhythm. A framing nailer, a sander, or minutes of blowing will not. Tank size does not increase airflow. If the motor cycle is the problem you are trying to buy your way out of, the 6 litre vs 24 litre air compressor page is the decision.

Read the word next to the airflow number

Aspirated air, displacement, and free air delivery are not interchangeable. A listing that omits the word is not quietly promising the air a tool will receive. Do not copy the SIP QT gap, 57 litres per minute displacement beside 42 litres per minute free air, onto the Draper's 185 litres per minute or the Stanley's 180. Those cells do not say free air. ABAC names its 110 litres per minute as aspirated air flow. Hyundai's description says 120 litres per minute, and the specification cell says 2 cubic centimetres per minute. Bimson's 131 litres per minute appears in a highlight and not in the specification. If a page prints two flows, do not buy the larger one and hope the smaller one was a typo.

Noise needs a method, and the plug is its own line

The Draper and Stanley cells say 97 dB. ABAC says 49 dB(A) and does not say whether that is sound pressure or sound power. SGS Engineering prints both figures on a different silenced 6 litre model: 49 dB sound pressure and 67 dB sound power. A 49 and a 97 on two amazon.co.uk cells were not shown to be the same test, and this comparison did not measure either machine. HSE guidance in INDG362 sets action values at 80 dB(A) and 85 dB(A) for an employer. Buying a DIY compressor does not place a householder inside those duties. A stated 97 dB machine is still a reason to keep runs short, which is the practical point on the 6 litre air compressor for a nail gun page if you are nailing indoors. UK domestic sockets take a BS 1363 plug. Hyundai's bullet says a standard 13 A UK plug. Bimson's highlight says UK 13 amp. ABAC lists a Type G adaptor, which is not a moulded three-pin plug. Stanley's specification is silent, and UK reviews say an EU or two-pin plug arrived. Draper's title states a 1.7 m cable and does not name the plug. If you cannot fit a correct plug yourself, stop and use a competent person.

Oil-free, condensate, and the small-tank limit

Oil-free is not a machine you never touch. Draper, ABAC, Hyundai, and Bimson say oil-free. Stanley's amazon.co.uk specification cell does not, so do not fill that gap from a dealer sheet. Oil-free still leaves water in the receiver. Drain after use, or daily if the compressor works every day. That habit comes from Air Supply's UK note. HSE's INDG178 says a portable receiver under 250 bar litres is not likely to need a written scheme of examination. Six litres at 8 bar is 48 bar litres. That arithmetic is not a waiver if you employ someone or pipe a workshop, and it is not permission to block the relief valve. One Draper review reports a burnt-out motor and a small fire. That is a single report, not a failure rate. Leave the category for a framing nailer all day, a sander, or a full-size spray gun. Spray Guns Direct puts full-size guns above about 50 litres. Raw prices on 19 October 2026 run from Bimson at £99.99 and Draper at £102.27, through Stanley at £122.60 and Hyundai at £129.99, to ABAC at £155.99.

Common questions

What should I check before I buy a 6 litre compressor?
Check the tank field in litres, then whether the airflow number is called intake, displacement, or free air. Check whether the decibel figure names a method, and whether the listing states a BS 1363 plug or only a Type G adaptor. A style line that disagrees with the tank field is the tank field you should plan around.
Does a bigger litres-per-minute number mean more air at the tool?
Only if both numbers are the same kind of airflow. The SIP QT page, outside this set, prints 57 litres per minute displacement and 42 litres per minute free air on one listing. ABAC says 110 litres per minute aspirated. Hyundai prints 120 litres per minute in the description and 2 cubic centimetres per minute in the specification cell. Buy the labelled figure, and ignore the larger of two conflicting ones.
Is 49 dB quieter in the same way that 97 dB is loud?
Not on the evidence in these listings. ABAC states 49 dB(A) without saying sound pressure or sound power. Draper and Stanley state 97 dB with no method either. SGS prints 49 dB sound pressure and 67 dB sound power on a different 6 litre model. You can treat a low stated figure as a reason to shortlist a silenced machine. You cannot treat the two amazon.co.uk cells as one test.
Will it have a UK three-pin plug?
Hyundai's bullet says a 13 A UK plug, and Bimson's highlight says UK 13 amp. ABAC lists a Type G adaptor, which is not a moulded plug on the compressor. Stanley's specification does not state a plug, and UK reviews describe an EU or two-pin plug. Draper states a 1.7 m cable and does not name the plug. A 230 V cell is not a plug.
Is oil-free the same as no maintenance?
No. Oil-free means you do not add pump oil. Condensate still collects in the tank, and UK reviews mention a drain on the Draper and the Hyundai. Drain after use. Stanley's amazon.co.uk cell does not even say oil-free, so do not assume the pump type from the other rows. A relief valve that does not match the manual is a stop, not a maintenance tip.
Do I need a written scheme for a 6 litre tank at home?
HSE's INDG178 says a portable receiver under 250 bar litres is not likely to need a written scheme. Six litres at 8 bar is 48 bar litres, so a domestic portable sits under that illustration. The same note is not a waiver if you employ someone or pipe a workshop, and it does not cover a dented receiver or a relief valve that has lifted.
When is an 8 litre model still the wrong row?
When you searched for 6 litres and the tank field says 8, as it does on the Hyundai HY5508X and the Bimson Power listing. An 8 litre silenced compressor can still be the better machine for a flat if the plug and the noise line are what you came for. It is the wrong row if you need the comparison to stay on confirmed 6 litre tanks.
